freitasm: I havee only skimmed the discussion, but some stuff to consider: - Vodafone is acquiring the largest unbundled local network (TelstraClear's got more gear in exchanges around the country than other ISPs). - Vodafone is getting a national backbone. The implications are huge, and will allow then to increase bandwidth allowing a much bigger traffic for their mobile data up and down the country. - Vodafone is getting a troublesome transparent proxy. I hope they can fix the overselling of that proxy farm sooner rather than later. - DMZGlobal is a good acquisition for them. - In my opinion it will be months, if not years before anything changes for Internet consumers... Largest LLU? Where did you get this from? Agree about the national backbone. Voda is Telecom Wholesale/Chorus's biggest customer for backhaul traffic on their mobile network.

I heard 2nd hand that it was mostly "back of house" services that would get the axe (an exmaple they gave was "Lawyers etc"), atleast at first. That the sales call center in christchurch may be kept but would be around until atleast 2014 and that the main telstraclear building in christchurch (barbadoes, cashel, hereford) has to be kept in operation due to "the cables going through there" 2nd hand from someone not very technical that works at TCL. If Vodafone offer me a good mobile discount because I have what will be "Vodafone warspeed" then I will be happy to switch, currently 2 degrees suits me better but I get terrble reception at work(Vodafone is better and telecom is best). As part of the sale, I see that Telstra AU are prevented from doing business in NZ for a period of time. Does anyone know how long this will last for? Telstra and Telecom teaming up would make a lot of commercial sense, as I note a lot of international commenters have suggested.

Dont really understand where all the "Game changing" hype is coming from.. Remember Vodafone and Telecom were in a giant cosy duopoly in the mobile market for a LONG time .. and all it did was screw consumers with over inflated prices which they were both happy with, the only thing that stopped that was the 2degrees entry.

Game-changing comes from two angles as I see it. For the enterprise, comms are often bundled together, so mobile, fixed line and business internet all come on the same bill. TC previously only resold mobile services, so now Vodafone will be able to sell the whole lot internally. This can give a surprising amount of leverage to their sales team. For the rest of the market, it's Vodafone making the statement that they want to considerably expand their NZ business outside of the mobile and mid-sized ISP world. They've taken on Telecom in the mobile space and now they want to compete in other market segments. Maybe game-changing is overstating the significance, but it's certainly a shake-up of the status quo.

A look over Telstra's financials indicates that they could quite easily afford to outright buy Telecom even at a premium over the current share price. That's also assuming an aggressive all-or-nothing takeover which may not be the best way to play it. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Interesting times though.

Shadbolt: quickymart: Here's hoping that it doesn't go the way it went when TelstraClear took over Paradise/Saturn. TelstraClear didn't take over Saturn. Saturn became TelstraClear by merging with TelstraNZ and then buying Clear. Right, that's what I meant. Doesn't mean the restructuring was any nicer. And to keep your Paradise address, you must have some on-account services with TCL, so I'm guessing you must have cable or ADSL with them.

Just received: The Commerce Commission has received an application from Vodafone New Zealand Limited seeking clearance to acquire TelstraClear Limited. Under the terms of the proposed acquisition, Vodafone will acquire 100% of the shares and/or assets of TelstraClear from Telstra Corporation Limited. Vodafone is a mobile phone operator in New Zealand and has a nationwide network servicing its mobile retail customers, as well as wholesaling mobile services to other providers. In addition, Vodafone offers a range of fixed line services to residential and business customers. TelstraClear offers a range of predominantly fixed line services to residential and business customers throughout New Zealand. In addition to its fixed line products, TelstraClear also offers cable TV, mobile (through a wholesale agreement with Vodafone) and backhaul services. In considering the application, the Commission?s role is to determine whether the acquisition would harm competition in the market, to the extent that there would be a substantial lessening of competition. I don't supposed we have any idea on how long a process like that takes with the ComCom? A bunch of people have speculated about changes but my thoughts is this process could take a while. EDIT: Turns out I should click the link first and post questions later. Decision date 27th July.

When I moved to Wellytown in 2006 I got thew InHome product and my clearnet account was still there, with the same settings. So, no, you may not need to have "on account" services

Bring back zfree! At work we use VF for mobile, and TCL for WAN and landline. Will be interesting to see what's on offer when things settle down.

DarthKermit: I was with paradise.net.nz since 2000. Had to change to TC after they phased out the Paradise brand. Weird, my wife and I still have @paradise accounts (not that I use mine). Edit: I see others have answered this question already, re fixed line services. I should have read the whole thread before replying to an earlier post.
