I currntly use TCL for my phone and broadband, SKY for my TV - I switched due to the late and subsequent problematic T-Box offering (not sure if that's improved - but that's another topic).

What I would like to know is how this will affect the pay tv offering.  Will they continue to back the T-Box or will they come to market with a new improved IPTV service?  Sky can't be holding all the cards for the broadcast licences, otherwise TVNZ etc would have nothing to show.  I agree, more money in the pot means they will have better purchasing power - however will this just mean that we will end up paying more for the same content (maybe this is another thread also).

Secondly is the mobile offering.  Currently, TCL resell VF - now it will become an in-house service.  I wonder if VF will begin to offer a competitive 4 way package; TV, BB, landline and mobile with some better integration in service between landline and mobile.

I guess all of this is premature as the ComCom have not yet confirmed if it will go ahead!

I wouldn't think it would make much difference as TCL didn't have their own mobile network, just resold Vodafone's product :)

To me the opportunity for someone like 2 degrees is to buy a small to medium ISP. Snap would be around the right size.

Essentially it comes down to leveraging infrastructure, if you are building a fibre backbone and installing switching gear, you could and should leverage this across mobile and fixed line broadband.

You could see some really innovative stuff if 2degrees moves into this space. I am thinking maybe a femtocell ala suresignal, but with a bit more smarts like a wifi hotpsot and wifi calling.

Telstraclear put gear in over 60 exchanges which I think is significantly more than Vodafone, Orcon, Compass, Callplus/Slingshot did.

Vodafone's + Telstraclears would easily be the largest.

Thats the key. Something has to change with 2d for them to effectively prevent a duopoly in the mobile space, otherwise VF and TCom will just push hard on triple-play residential bundling and corporate contracts, strangling 2d.

Its hard to tell, but I get the impression the 2d's current backers dont want to be around for the long term, leaving the question of which ISP has the cash to buy them, or who takes over 2d

Hopefully not Singtel, but I suppose that would be the obvious one. I guess Orcon/Kordia might have some interest.

I don't think that 2degrees needs to have their own DSL service to compete with full package offerings though - they would just need to partner with an existing DSL provider. The only problem is that existing DSL providers like Orcon and Snap already have MNVO arrangement with Telecom and Vodafone which might be difficult to get out of.

I wonder about the economics of being an MVNO, it would appear to me not to leverage your existing infrastructure as it is all about running a VPN over someone elses infrastructure. I would expect that 2degrees should leverage infrastructure that an ISP has installed/purchased to shore up the network and deliver clever innovations.

The first thing VF would have to do to achieve this would be to have a unified billing system.  And since they're still making excuses about how difficult it is to unify the (legacy?) BB customer database with  their Mobile database and billing platform, I'm picking it will be a long time coming! 

Unless of course TCL have a better billing platform(?)..... or this added infrastructure is actually the motivator VF needs to sort this out.

In the detailed proposal they talk about
* moving Auckland TC customers to Vodafone's unbundled exchanges
* moving Christchurch/Wellington/Kapiti Vodafone customers to TC's cable
* unbundling more exchanges because larger # of customers will make that economically viable
Given the other threads on Geekzone about performance degradation for unbundled users in the cabinetized world that might work out not so well for users.

Also interesting that not all of TC's mobile frequency blocks can be transferred to the new entity, because there are caps set by government. By swapping allocations VF can increase from 2x15MHz to 2x25Mhz in some bands, while Telstra (Australia) can retain/sell the rest as it sees fit.

Not all of them if it's 61 exchanges, but I digress. Anyway, am I remembering incorrectly about people asking Orcon to move them from unbundled exchange to cabinet to avoid lower sync rates from crosstalk ? (cue sbiddle & co!). Is there any reason why unbundled TC users wouldn't be subject to the same issues ?

All ULL connections would be subject. It's up to the ISP to be pro active and connect the users using the correct connection available.

Most of the examples I have seen where customers had problems with cabinetisation were due to cabinets being installed in areas already unbundled creating the problem where it wasn't before.

Not really a problem in a planned migration as appropriate checks can be done before hand.




Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.
