Firstly, I don't know what the margins are on broadband (DSL and cable), but I'm curious what people want or expect from TelstraClear — one of the country's largest ISPs.

It has been a while since TelstraClear refreshed their plan line-up, besides the recent $75 bundle promotion. Do the current plans adequately offer a good range of data options at a fair price? Given that a few other ISPs like Orcon and Snap are now offering significantly more bang for the buck, I personally don't reckon that TCL is offering much flexibility — especially for big data users.

Our usage habits change a lot even over 12 months. I know mine have. So what would you like to see TelstraClear offer for DSL and their own cable network? Purely for the sake of discourse.

Below are some current (naked) plans for both DSL and cable. The website obviously has more info on packages, but this is a start:

they are in the process of being bought by Vodafone, so I doubt we will see any major changes until that happens.
Conditions of ale would probably restrict them from doing anything too redical before the sale goes through (kinda like how when you buy a house the seller isn't allowed to pull down an extension between the date of sale and taking posession)

Valid point. Any merging of brands probably isn't likely for a while, if the sale is approved.

What do I want? Hrrm... Let the dreaming commence!

Unlimited, unmanaged, unthrottled data.

Failing that, drastically increased data caps, data overage at $0.10/GB or less, removal of artificial speed caps on cable plans (DOCSIS3 technology can apparently go faster than 100/10.. give me 400/100!)

Also dead keen for TelstraVodaClear to switch the cable network over to not use static IP's, and change their logging practises to purge logs as fast as practicable to help fight "Guilt by IP".

Would also love to see TCL put in a overseas data centers, and start offering plans with cable modem routers that VPN all traffic to an overseas endpoint.

In short, TCL do everything it can to maximise the privacy and anonymity of it's customers.

They said in the first announcement they will still compete against each other but wouldn't blame the marketing team to go into "shut down mode" with the pending sale

And all this for the same monthly price you're paying now ?
Dreaming was pretty much the right word choice there.

I dropped my DSL cap from 40gb to 20gb a couple of months ago. They called about 3 weeks ago offering to double the 20 for no extra cost and give us free national toll calls. Only catch was to stay with them for 12 months.

Is a 40GB inhome cable plan sufficient for regular TV streaming, and doing online backups, among other things?

The thing I want it the thing I have no hope of getting, zero rated QuickFlix.

The same for TVNZ or TV3 on demand with apps for something other than iOS, but again it is a pipe dream and I admit it.

As a home user, but not an internet gamer, I don't really need big data caps or higher speed for anything other than watching video.

As these services would compete with Sky which has a close relationship with Voda, I'm not holding my breath.

Oh, yeah, and if we are going completely crazy than something like the Global Mode from Fyx which lasted five min would be cool too. Yeah, no chance of that.

Thing is I'm in Wellington on the cable network and I'm pretty happy with the service I have now.

SteveT, Yeah, I have the 40GB InHome and I'm really happy with it. Depends on how much you want to do as to whether 40GB is enough.

Why unmetered quickflix rather than just a much bigger cap?

Unmetered quickflix means you are restricted to only watching content from Quickflix. A larger cap means you cnause it for whatever you want. That might be quickflix right now, but might be something else next year.

If you watch 2 hours of quickflix every single night, you are still only going to use a lot less than 100GB/month ? and TCL (and every other ISP) has plans at least as big as that if you want them.

and you can get Fyx's 'global mode' from www.unblock-us.com for only $5USD per month.

NonprayingMantis: Why unmetered quickflix rather than just a much bigger cap?

I see your point. A bigger cap would be nice but as I remember the Orcon plans with unmetered QuickFlix were much cheaper than plans with caps over 100GB and QuickFlix is what I would use the cap for.

I would love to see other streaming video services in the market but as NetFlix and Hulu dominate the US market I doubt we will see another entrant any time soon.

My understanding, probably wrong, was that unblock-us didn't work on the Telstra cable network but I can remember the reasons why.

Un-metering shouldn't even be a feature of an ISP's product. Just offer more data at a reasonable price. It's not asking for much.

From TelstraClear's twitter account:
'Hi Jeremy, we are constantly reviewing our packages. No immediate plans for cable that I am aware of.'

I'm so over mediocrity from this company. I seriously doubt margins will be affected by giving customers more choice and more flexibility with respect to data.

n.b. — Moving to another ISP isn't an option in the block of units we live in due to the cable setup (separate topic altogether).
