DonGould: Great to see that we both clearly agree the answer to this problem is to move as many customers as we can from Telecom to other providers.

I was simply addressing the question of how to get TelstraClear customers more value.

Stage 1 is we need to get customers off Telecom to TelstraClear.


I worked for Telstra Clear and there's no way I'd ever want to be a customer of theirs ever again. I have seen too many bad things happen while I was there.

I don't know what your back story is, but I'm not going to argue that TCL isn't sick.... 

As I posted above, it seems to only deliver an 8th of the value that Orcon does, so I really just can't argue that one.

The problem is that they're the only ones with decent infrastructure running down my street.

I've seen the Chorus copper in my area.  I know DSL is really amazing technology, but there are limits.

It does seem simpler to lobby a bit to just get the TCL team to figure out the business case to just bring us the sort of value that Orcon are able to on someone elses network.

But you have a point, I can't argue that one with you, not mater how much Rangor chooses to call me a fanbi.

I get that it's all a bit futile really until the ComCom makes up its mind about VF doing a take over and then another 6 months after that while VF sort out what they're going to do with the HFC network.

...but someone said to me once...

According to the SAT tool I'm 1 building on the wrong side of the VDSL boarder.

According to the local Chorus guys the SAT tool is wrong and the local cabinet is not a switch cabinet at all and only a MDF back to the exchange... which would put me 3 km away at least.

But even if the I got a service delivered to the building next door, the cable is 60 years old, paper insulation, and has at least 4 breaks in it in the last 50m.  (Long story....  diggers, broken sewers and grumpy plumbers from Wellington do not mix well with telco cable even when it's VERY well marked).

I wouldn't like to guess how many split pairs their are on that cable now.  The cable is also very T'ed.  I've seen the network diagram, so I can understand why they didn't bother putting a local NGN cabinet on the cable.

My best answer for some competition to Telstra is to just pick up the Enabled Networks fibre running down Hills Road and then use radio to bring it back to this building.

I'm right next door to a medical center.  So I was hoping that we'd see UFB here very shortly.  But I had a chat with Enabled yesterday and the whole area has been bumped because there are 1,000 home sub divisions that are going in on the other side of the city that are being given priority.

I rang TCL up today and said I was comparing their price with VF and Telecom and they came to the party with a special 12 month rate of $75 for 40gb with phone that's $30 off the regular price. Not the cheapest perhaps but I've had great quality BB for 6 years. That counts for something in my book.

Anyway my point being that the listed price is not the only price. Just ask!

ya... not helpful for those of us who actually use the internet!

I used 10Gb today.

With Orcon I could have used 30Gb for the same price and not compromised my monthly spend.

I don't think we're arguing that TCL has the bottom of the market taken care of...

But what the?!.... they've got the top end of the market network and looking after the bottom end of the market on price.

Such a rule would impact all users.

The routers would have to have an IP list on them which is checked with every request, or each user session would have to be terminated in a different way.

Dave Robb was on list a couple of weeks back telling us how this sort of complexity just gets expensive to implement.

Roll on UFB.

The UFB really is the answer to this problem.  What we really need to do is lobby to get the HFC network over built sooner than later.

It seems fairly clear to me that the HFC areas are where those of us who actually want to use the Internet are.

Time to start writing to Amy and your local MP and asking for priority on your area.

UFB helps because it will be a layer 1/2 delivery system that will be on par with the HFC network. 

However, UFB will give you a choice of RSPs, which HFC in Christchurch does not. 

Some of those RSPs either don't proxy or use proxy systems that work well (to a level that does not annoy users as the TCL proxy servers seem to annoy many of you).

I know of at least one ISP who is planning to enter the RSP arena with no intention to proxy at all.

Moving on from the condescending tone!  My point being - have you actually asked TCL whether they can do anything for you?

To the OP - I can PM you a number of their sales team to see what they can do.  He was very helpful in explaining the options and prices.
