Hi all,

Im new here and have had a search about trying to solve my problem; but nothing recent seems to cover it just so. (though there is mention of TCL international browsing having some issues).

Basically I have 40gb lightspeed inhome cable. The majority of use is all cabled from directly from modem (standard motorola) to router (belkin wireless) to PC. We have some wireless gadgets too, but the majority of use is on the directly cabled (ie not wireless) PC. We also have a secondary motorola modem for the TV/Tbox, and of course your standard landline, all through a single TCL plan.

In order to save some time, and avoid getting myself into a... well fired up, ill just post what I sent to TCL. Hopefully BBCode spoiler tags are enabled, otherwise apologies for the wall of text:

Hi

I don't have a question. I have a technical issue which I want to send supporting information (speed tests) in order to rectify these issues that I have been having with my internet service.

Firstly I called your helpdesk yesterday and they told me nothing was wrong with my internet, b ut if the problem persists do some speed tests to see if you can pin down the issue; so later that night (when the issues usually pop up) I ran a lot of speed test's (www.speedtest.net).

Firstly I have identified the issue as being with international browsing. Testing locally I regularly got 12-15 Mb/s DL speed which is fine, seemed a little spikey at times but nothing that will cause issues. The international tests, however gave some fairly good (well bad really... but good in that they highlight my issue) results.

Seeing as I spend a decent amount of my internet usage playing online games with servers based in the US (along with this aspect being the most critical speed wise, I am happy to wait for a website to load slowly, but you cant actually play these games with a poor connection) my test location was the "Internode" server in Los Angles. Below is a selection of the best and worst of the tests which were carried out during the evening - notice the variability between some tests that were carried out close to one another: (note that I cleared cache and history etc before doing tests)

Worst:

9:04pm using firefox

9:01pm using firefox

9:19pm using firefox (note: this wasn't in the top 10 worst but interesting in that it occurred after one of the "best" tests showing that it bounces around)

9:40pm using firefox

9:39pm using IE

9:42pm using IE

Best:

9:14pm using firefox

9:22pm using firefox

9:50pm using IE

Strange tests: (note that later on I got some very weird results where the test would actually hang on connecting and/or have a VERY high ping with a normal DL/UL speeds)

9:47pm using IE

9:46pm using IE

Note for reference a typical non-issue speed to LA Internode server is around 175ms ping, 6-7 Mb/s upload and 2Mb/s download as seen below:

Another point to note was the speed tests were quite volatile; almost as though the connection would drop part way through the test, then come back, with an average speed value being ok, but with a weird spike in the middle, or if it happened during the ping test it would freeze for half a minute (progress bar would stop) then resume. Also there were 1-2 times where it couldnt actually connect to the LA server at all (error message came up with the test).

I hope this is enough reason to investigate further; the lowish speeds I can handle, the spike down to essentially zero (web pages will not load and show a connection error or I will freeze/lag out completely in game) is where the problem lies. If this problem persists I will be looking for a new provider, which is sad because TCL have some great aspects as well.

Cheers,

[/spoiler]

Can anyone help with this? Or experiencing the same thing? Basically TCL have come back and told me to do more speed tests - I dont know if I am over reacting but my instant reaction was to send them a long, nasty and abusive email, followed by a disconnection notice. But I have relaxed a little now and am just asking why I need to do the testing when they have the tools to monitor the connection themselves (is 0.22 or close to 1% of advertised speed not rationale enough to do a 24hr monitoring test?!) - is there something a speed test at 9am will tell them which a 24hr monitoring test wont?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys provide - and I hope I have obeyed all the rules properly.

I think its stupid really that we have to monitor the speeds ourselves. At first, we have to, but if we are clearly having issues, then surely TC has the ability to automatically check your connections speed at various times so we don't have to stop whatever we are doing and conduct it.

I have noticed improvement over the last few days. However this morning, from 2.30am until ~6.30am, I noticed slow speeds (but probably due to torrent downloading hour). However, that may not be the cause of the slowness, so should be investigated I believe.

I haven't looked at the speed tests (on mobile now and will edit your post to use omg tags soon) but... Are your tests over wireless or wired connection to the router?

I have had the most trouble with facebook these past few days. This includes being on the TC DNS servers (the newer ones, ones that are recommended on this forum), plus the Norton DNS servers I mention in an earlier post in this thread.

Anyone else with this?
