Just wondering what I'm in for and weather i can take my phone to Aussie with me while there for a sports tournament?

You should consider getting a local SIM if you want to avoid paying roaming charges. This is true for any telco, not only TelstraClear.

Depending on where you're going to be, get a prepay sim from either Telstra.au or Optus.au

Telstra is more expensive than the other two networks but does seem to come with the quality.

Vodafone has been heaverly criticized for being very poor (see www.vodafail.com)

www.whirlpool.net.au is a great resource for everything telco in Australia.

If the OP is using a TelstraClear handset then Telstra is not a good option.

Telstra uses 850 MHz 3G, while TelstraClear handsets are provided by Vodafone NZ which is 900/2100 MHz 3G and most likely won't be compatible (unless it's a quadband handset).

Don Vodafone AU has done alot over the last 18 months and the network is much better they are spending 1 billion AU on it Vodafone AU also does a weekly blog of sites upgraded and new sites gone live

Thanks for the reply's. So the best idea is to get a local vodafone sim and maybe set up an answer message on my NZ one giving the new number?. It's a real pain as i've just picked up a large contract today and this will be right in the middle of the main ordering phase. Does anyone have a rough idea of the roaming charges that seem to catch people out? the simple ones i will investigate right now.

Understand data roaming charges and you pay for all incoming calls

Quite a bit of good info on the Telstra site. Definitely tolerable price wise and data is cheaper than any other country.
