Why did I upgrade to my new set top ?
I like the recording part but picture quality is the same as the old set top box even after upgrading TV DVD player and Amp.

Hmmmm digital quality  don't think so, Freeview digital quality is WOW AWESOME NICE DETAILED.

So after many sleepless nights thinking about why did I spend all that money on upgrading my equipment I realized how stupid I FORGOT TO RING TELSTRACLEAR  AND CROSS THEIR PALMS WITH TEN BUCKS A MONTH.

Now you may think what a Cheap Charlie ,ten bucks aint much but it is about 120 smakaroos  a year ,but I think that having a digital set top box and digital this and digital that that I would receive a nice clear detailed digital picture on my TV screen as part of a normal service.

Oh how naive I am.

I am a bit ouf of the loop. What's this $10 for?

Do you watch anything else on top of Freeview anyway?

How do you get Freeview (built-in TV, decoder)? And how do you connect the TCL set top box to your TV set (HDMI, composite, component)?

Sounds like you're talking about a T Box?

"Hmmmm digital quality don't think so, Freeview digital quality is WOW AWESOME NICE DETAILED."

Was this with all the same equipment bar the T Box? My understanding is that free to air channels should automatically be received in HD, it's the premium channels such as Movies or Sport that require a HD ticket (Just like Sky ;) )

$10 is to upgrade to High Definition sports channels and if you subscribe movie channels (zzzzzzzz)
I connect with HDMI of course and I also watch the documentary channels .

I use the Telstra set top decoder to watch Freeview ,which isn't much but is a nice picture the TV decoder (Terrestrial) is clear as a bell if I wanted to use it but I would like to see the Sports in true HD as a normal service through the Telstraclear set topbox not 120 dollars extra a year ,I know when we view old TV footage it isnt great and you wont get great picture quality that I can live with.

Yes Freeview is HD on set top  yes Tv decoder is HD but why isn't Telstraclear Sports and Movies HD without the extra monthly payment

Simple answer to that is because Sky TV charge extra for these HD channels. Most of TelstraClear content is sourced from Sky, so they're simply passing on the costs.

Standard business practice - a structured product.

Would you also expect to be able to buy 98 petrol for the same price as 91?

Nope, I read the topic again and the debate is about the $10. You even posted in capital letters. You're the one changing the debate after your argument was shown invalid.

Without HD Ticket you still get channel 1,2 and 3 in HD. SoHo, Movies and Sport aren't. I agree that FreeViewHD seems to be slightly superior in look and definitely in sound. I also agree that the HD ticket is stupid and therefore I don't pay for it.

Rather arrogant sounding posts above.

The topic label is "Why did I upgrade to the new set top box" and to be honest only you will know the answer to that. No one else can tell you why you opted to upgrade the box.  Yes the $10 HD ticket is rude, but with only one provider of this live sports content in NZ there is no competition.  You don't have to pay it but upgrading the box alone is not sufficient to be supplied the HD content.  You have to pay for that part currently.

Regarding content, I would expect that only certain shows are offered in HD. The rest will not be true HD and may be scaled, either by the broadcaster or the box itself. Others will be able to comment on this. Looking through the SKY TV online guide, they label the shows with HD on the end if it's a true HD broadcast.

Otherwise, if it's a true HD show it should look much better if you've purchased what amounts to SKY's $10 HD ticket. If it doesn't look as good then you may need to take a closer look at the settings to ensure you are passing the full HD signal from the box to the TV.
