Hi

I thought I would come here in the hope of some informed costumer service  as my move to Miramar, Wellington has not gone too well at this point (as far as my ISP is concerned).

I have just brought my first home with my partner in Miramar, Wellington. Everything has been amazing, great house, stress free sale and a sunny 3 days to move!!

But then I stared to arrange to have my Telstraclear account moved from Newtown over to Miramar ...... I started by jumping on the telstraclear website and checked the area coverage map for the cable plans, seeing that my new house was smack bang in the middle of the red marked area (the colour used to state you are inside the warpspeed zone), with this in mind I thought the move would be simple, one easy phone call but how wrong I was.

To date I have made 4 calls and each time be told conflicting information and half answers intend (I believe) to make me give up.

My first call I was told "No Miramar is not inside our cable zone", I then informed her that the website implied otherwise, at which she replied "the map is just indicative" and that in-fact none of the surrounding Suburbs had fibre. Seems very un- indicative really.

I then phoned a few days later in inquire why I had not been contacted by the move team regarding my move and was told that the "Move team" was separate and there was no way to give an update. Here is where things got interesting tho, I was then told by this helpline person that the first lady had put me wrong and infact Miramar does have fibre-optic and that "no change" was needed on my type of plan or service.

Another few days had past I them revived a phone message from the "move team" saying once again no fibre is available in my area and not only would I need to pay the move fee but I would need to sign a new 12 month contract before they would do the move on December 27th (when I had told them November 27th countless times, not to mention Dec 27 is the day after boxing day who is moving then....

So long story short, I have a few questions:

Why can I not have cable when other houses in my suburb seem to have what look like cables going to there house (and I'm coloured in red on your map)

Why have I been told so much mis-information

And why am I being asked to pay a $60 moving fee for my current plan but also having to sign a new one. Surely it is one or the other.

You should have cable in Miramar unless you're in an area with really new builds in it.  I also live in Miramar and would be very surprised if you wouldn't have coverage there.  Unless you're in an area with lots of new builds but I can't think of anywhere on the peninsular that's like that so you should be fine.

Hi you say new house is iitt a new build and possibly a back sub divided section, if so it may inf act mean you cannot connect to Telstras HFC network. I have seen this numerous time around Wellington including Mirimar and Strath more.

I am on a back section as in XXa but the house was built in the 80's so was here when they put the cables down the street.

Does being down a drive way matter, they run the cable for Km upon Km round the country. Does 25m to a back section play a factor?

Yes, being down a driveway does matter. I know of people who were doing a very long driveway in Paekakariki who couldn't get cable: from memory they would have to dig up the entire driveway. Admittedly this was 10 years ago, so the situation may have changed by now.

Three years ago I had a client in Strathmore, back section new build, I was supplying TV/Data/Phone/AV etc. He was a Telstra fan and that was what was set to supply the house. Last minute, drive fully open trenched for services and Telstra refused to provide connection. The conversations with Telstra went on for days but as I read it, they had no intention of spending/wasting one more dime on expanding the network and nothing we could do or say was going to change it.

Finally after I reassured him that Telecom DSL was not like in the old days I threw a duct and line in to the Telecom Pedistal ran cables to a dish site and he has never looked back. There was a brand new cabinet only 200m from his drive, as I recal 4dB attenuation.

I assume the past owners had Sky and Telecom, so maybe just as easy to take the plunge.

Yep... Doesn't sound good for you if you don't have a clear line of sight from the pole at the street to your house (ie not over a shared driveway) or ducting sufficiently big enough to drag the Coax/Copper cable through.

It's all about if the cable can pass from the street to your house, without crossing any shared land or neighbours land.  If that has to happen then TelstraClear can't install.  The main killer is if your driveway is a shared driveway not your own land.

Sweet well all good signs.

I have my own drive way (no shared access) the lamp post is right at the end of said drive way. Also the drive way is only about 15m.

What happens if they say "we would love to but the cable didn'tget run to your house" can they request Chorus install one or do I need to pay, how does that work?

Chorus will not run a leadin for a competitors network, only TCL can do that. As for paying TCL to do it, as in the example above in Strathmore the trench was open and I was happy to do the work on behalf of the customre (so he paid), the offer was declined.

When I was in Christchurch (I'm now back in Wellington) they did an install on a shared driveway no problems at all.  They just needed consent from the neighbours. No digging up the driveway, just a couple of holes where they has to turn a corner but that was all sealed back up properly.
It may be different in Wellington through.  Everything in Chch is underground as apposed to being on the poles in Welly.

I have been contacted again by the Helpline and they are going to get me connected via ADSL to get me up and running.

In the meantime TelstraClear (the Geekzone user) is looking into cable for me, in regards to if its possible to have a cable run to my house, as it was deemed that the cost of installing a cable to my back section was too high.

But as I said TelstraClear are looking into this for me and he is being very helpful.

Just a quick question: do most older streets in Wellington still have above ground phone and power cables?

Power yes,

Most phone trunk wiring is actually underground, but the final drop to the house is overhead, (it will pop up a pole and then go overhead to the house)
