TelstraClear: Hi all. We're looking into these reports now. Once I know more I'll update you.

Cheers, Gary

Might want to note that the 0508 888 800 number is down also, just an engaged signal compared to other numbers which work.

Yes. I noticed that an hour ago. However just got through, and Internet is back up and running.

I wasn't aware if it was a DNS thing, so naturally didn't change my DNS servers so I could access the web.

Thanks all for your patience. All should be back to normal now and the phones are back to normal too (we had a few calls!).

Cheers, Gary

I doubt that twitter would be helpful, if you cannot access any webpage.

Many people have smartphones and Twitter is a first port of call.

Sorry have to laugh:

15:22 - Gary tells Geekzone everything should be fine (as it is)
15:23 - "CH" tells Twitter "Hi Guys, Techs are looking into the DNS server issues right now - will post updates as they come through"

I suppose at least there was finally a Twitter update :)

Thanks Gary - any information on the cause? Although you're perhaps not allowed to provide that info?

(Nice thing about when you are hosting servers with good hosting companies is they provide you detailed-ish info on what caused outages... wish ISPs could be the same open and honest)

Now back to watch my Tbox that I started on a system check @ 12.30 (yes, 3 hours ago) and its only up to 62%...

What I've noticed from other companies that embrace transparency is greater loyalty and respect. Goes a long way.

sleemanj: PS: So much for redundancy. Isn't that the point of having TWO dns servers (43/44).

you shouldn't use two dns servers on the same subnet.

Interesting as I had this problem at a client today which was on Paradise which Clear brought a long time ago, which of course clear was then purchased by TelstraClear.

Paradise DNS
203.96.152.4
203.96.152.12

Clear DNS
203.97.33.1
203.97.37.1 - Good Different subnet

TelstraClear DNS
203.97.78.43
203.97.78.44

As you can see Clear.net had it sussed, different subnets. Both Paradise and TelstraClear same subnet.

I know the clear.net off by heart as I've been pinging it for years on occasion as it's my test ping ip :-) I sometimes think with great happiness of the admins of 203.97.33.1...

it is a simplification, and doesn't always hold true especially in internal networks, but it's a general rule of thumb.

basically - you should have two paths to the DNS servers, so they both don't go out at once, and generally be in separate locations if possible.

that said, whenever primary dns server goes down performance drops sharply.  and your primary dns should never go down.  but it it does, it is handy to have a backup.

i generally consider 3 dns servers to be sensible.  but, if the isp isn't providing a second good backup there are a few options.

8.8.8.8, 4.2.2.2, and telstra australia's dns all happen to work.

203.97.78.43
203.97.78.44

could be on completely different machines/subnets.

These days a lot of ISP's Anycast their DNS Servers so you have (as a /32) in say Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch the same IP Address. This means 203.97.78.43/32 is a completely different subnet as 203.97.78.44/32.

I'm not saying TelstraClear do it this way but quite a few do.
