Reporting in - Complex faults dude is going to try the same tests I've been doing. Speeds are still dismal (3.2mbit/sec at lunch today)

I've given him an account on the server, and a file full of junk to copy down.

Activity on the server indicates he's running some tests. No results (that I've seen) yet.

You and me both! I've given the dude accounts on both my box (where the performance is sh*t) and on my mate's box (where the performance is good, but the ISP is XNet).

(Told him to go easy on my connection given I'm 14GB over the limit already - too much copying of 100Mb rubbish files testing all this stuff!!)

I hope TC make some consideration given all the testing time you've put in to fault find an issue with their network that should eventually benefit them as must as you?

:) Give him a chance.  I'm sure he's building a test plan first and figuring a simulation.

To keep in perspective though, you're complaining about a residential broadband service with no performance SLAs only being able to achieve 3-4mbps on a single thread, when with multiple threads you can still max out the connection?

I agree that it's a little odd, but it's hardly the worst example of a broadband 'fault' I have ever seen.

To clarify, yes, I agree there's something a little odd here, but performance is by no means actually bad - and there is (presumably) no performance SLAs associated with this product... TCL are going WAY above and beyond in the level of troubleshooting they are giving this IMO.

Telstra Clear repeatedly states that they don't shape the connection in any way shape or form.  Given that they charge per byte, they have no reason to.

So, this means that their service doesn't match their published statements, and as such they must either fix the service or refund the fee.

This sort of "bug" is exactly what got Telecom into hot water with the regulator.

Yes.

We are heading in to a world with 100mbit tax payer funded fibre.

Telstra claim:  "We have the best IP network in New Zealand,"

Let's remember that jnawk simply started out say that he saw a performance difference between his Telstra HFC connection and an Xnet ADSL based service.

TCL are going WAY above and beyond in the level of troubleshooting they are giving this IMO.

Sure, so far they've provided contact with someone internally who has the skills to deal with it, but hasn't even got to it?

Where as jnawk has run a heap of tests, put it out there to the community for comment and discussion.

I agree this is best effort stuff but when you work for home that's the best you can buy.

We don't all have the skills and qualifications to get the big ticket jobs in the big telcos.

Many of us have to focus on making a living working on the fringe because that is the level of our ability.

We're not buying business grade 100mbit or 1Gb protected links.  We're buying 15mbit links to provide service to the community (I've lost count of the number of not for profit web sites I now run for community organizations).

If wondering why you can only get a third of the link capacity from one residentiual provider over another is loosing perspective then I think we really need to understand a bit more about that though some good discussion.

TelstraClear have also been told that if they don't solve this, they'll loose business (mine). Given this issue (appears to have) only got looked at because of this thread, and supposedly the publicity this thread has given the issue, I think they are trying to protect their business.

It's good to know that Telecom appear not to give a sh*t about even providing "best effort", and will cowardly hide behind the fact they provide no SLA.

That post has been informative for me - should TelstraClear fail to resolve the matter, I'll be looking elsewhere, and now I've narrowed the list by one provider. Thanks for that, Mr. Telecom.

Apparently I can't say sh*t here. Sorry.

With all due respect, I was basically complimenting TCL on the attention they are giving to this issue. I think you have over-reacted to my comment.

This isn't shaping, The TCP stack has been tweaked to higher than default 64k and as such with the latency his single TCP stream performance is limited to 64k. I'm not actually sure there is a issue
