iOS6 and Mountain Lion are software things. We are talking about hardware.

When Apple announces new hardware it's either available immediately, or they give the dates.

Problem is that if Microsoft announces dates, they announce the day Windows 8 will be available for which there is no official date yet. I bet if this tablet was already released and they were to do an upgrade next year on the hardware, they would not mind announcing the date. When the slim Xbox 360 was revealed at E3, they released it a week later in US and this was announced.

I am going to be annoyed though if this is US only release like the Zune player.

Problem is... they still have no clue on how to launch a product.

It's not clear to me what kind of wireless connectivity the device has -- 3G, 4G, wifi? Has anyone found this out? Without this kind of basic information, how can anyone consider buying it?

David.

Microsoft is full of clever people. Their marketing people in Redmond on the other hand are not.

They should really follow the Apple line. Announce a product, with immediate availability or a set date. None of this "only in the US" story.

If you buy the Windows 8 PRO version of this tablet, you get to run all the existing bazillion apps for Windows out there + download apps from Windows 8 apps store. Full featured office client, pen input, bitlocker device encryption, different UI and UX and hardware design.

If you buy the Windows RT version of this tablet, then MS Office comes pre-installed, Windows 8 apps store, different UI and UX, hardware design etc.

I hear and understand what you're saying

Know one has said Surface is US only and it won't be available in NZ

Others have stated on this thread why the launch day wasn't announced, but that it would be available as soon as Windows 8 launches

There are some good reasons to announce it today a few months before its available - so people know that its coming and take that into account when choosing purchasing strategies etc

I already have a bazillion apps, for my android and apple products.
Office is minorly interesting but they have office coming for Android/IOS within the same frame. I can get pen input from my existing hardware. Encryption I can get via an app.

Cool. Let me know when you can run full featured photoshop with pen for drawing on your android or ipad tablet. Also let me know when you can plug in a USB flash drive into your ipad to transfer stuff across to explorer or a folder. Also let me know when you can plug the SD card directly into your ipad to transfer photos from you DSLR without plugging in a adapter. Also let me know when you can domain join the ipad or android without wasting $$$ on useless MDM solutions. I can seriously go on and on and on.

Also devices like Acer W710 Windows 8 tablet have a thunderbolt port on the side. External graphics card, docking station solution and so much more.

You really believe that MS marketing isn't full of clever people?

Because they are different from Apple doesn't make them bad. Remember the Windows 7 (and vista, and XP, and 2000, and 98, and 95) launches? They were impressive, and if I recall correctly, there was close to a worldwide launch for at least some of them.

Cheers - N

I can do this on my Acer tablet and my s3...my terabyte drives too.. What's the big deal?

The problem is this will be about $1200 and delayed.. That's the reason ms never announce dates anymore!

billgates: Wait so did Apple announce which month and date they are releasing iOS6 and Mountain Lion besides saying 'This fall'? So if Microsoft states releasing Surface and Windows 8 'this holiday' without giving a date, it's bad marketing but when Apple does it, it's ok.

Fair comment, and not being pro Apple but its a bit different. ML and iOS6 are OS's, one is free, the other is a small cost that Apple quoted, and they went deepish on what you get. Surface looks very interesting, but no date, no price, which is a key for a hardware release.

"There are some good reasons to announce it today a few months before its available - so people know that its coming and take that into account when choosing purchasing strategies etc "

Sorry I don't think a lot of people looking at a tablet are interested in seeing something they can't get just yet. I know many people that won't even wait a few days to halve the price of a purchase (as go to somewhere like DSE to get a flash drive as opposed to buying from a online retailer for a lot cheaper).

Sure there will be people who do do as you say but a lot of people and markets are relying on impulse buying for supermarkets this is their bread and butter and they do store layouts specifically to encourage that.

Knowing a product is coming is good for a lot smaller market than knowing I can have x product on x date and preorder it now or simply buying the best available to meet your needs now.

Just for reference I am in no way a Apple fanboy don't own one in any form and won't they make good products but price them for maximum profit and idiots eat them up. As for this upcoming Windows tablet it looks good on a spec sheet but at the end of the day is it really going to do anything different than all the rest when it comes out??? I think and hope it does well and brings something new, as just another tablet that plays music, video and has a nice display with good storage is not really anything special.

Or is it that it will integrate well with your pc supposed to be the big selling point??? Ipad integrates well with the Mac PC / Laptop range doesn't it. I hope the keyboard is not the drawcard gimmick as sorry but a tablet pc with a plug in keyboard is a little too much like a laptop don't you think???
