Just spotted this on the Microsoft Facebook page: http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/b/bloggingwindows/archive/2012/07/02/upgrade-to-windows-8-pro-for-39-99.aspx In a nutshell, upgrade from Win XP, Vista or 7 to Win 8 Pro for $40 Can anyone spot a catch?

And media center add on is included for free as a separate add on till the promotion time ends which is 31st January 2013. It's $20 if you by windows 7 on a new PC from June. It does suck though that you have to pay extra for windows media centre, even if your windows 7 version had it. I don't really see the advantage of windows 8 on non tablet PC, after trialling it on a notebook.

Hmmm... just bought a new laptop that came with a $20 upgrade to Win 8 when it drops. I thought that was a good deal but doesn't sound so amazing now. Still, can't complain... Toys: Samsung Galaxy S2 (Telecom), iPad 4, Roku, iPod Touch 4, Dell Inspiron 17R SE laptop, Sony 40CX520 TV, TiVo x2, Snap ADSL.

However XE says $39.99 is NZ$49.60 so you're kind of right but I think what's going to happen is that everyone will just license it over the interwebs and pay the single global price. I doubt it will be US$40/NZ$50 if you happen to walk into DSE, Noel Leeming etc though.

They go for the 99 cents rounding even if they charge slightly more for it. Strange how they're no longer going to include WMC. I hope it doesn't mark an unfortunate turn for the worse. I'm already unhappy with the tiered pricing structure. What if they introduce packages like the "Essentials Addon: Get notepad, the calculator, AND paint for one low price of just $9.95!" That, couples with the rather unfortunate Metro interface, leaves me wondering why I would upgrade from 7.

If they're planning on moving to a more app-based system, like iOS and WP7, that might be the case: break it down & sell the bits separately - on the bright side, rather than pay $5 for notepad, there would be a dozen different free alternatives as well.

How realistic is it to shell out $300 for an operating system? I have a MSDN account that grants me access to MS software due to me being in the industry so I can relate to the level of piracy MS is getting. It is good if they offer an upgrade option for the latest release
