mate its an ARM device it doesn't run X86 apps because it can't not because Microsoft doesn't want it to

both Windows 8 and Windows RT support Modern Windows 8 style apps being side loaded without having to go through the Windows Store 
 



where i was comming from is windows RT can only install software from windows store, where as x86/windows 8 for tablet is not locked down to windows store only.

could you supply a reference to showing that you can isntall programs on RT that are not from the windows store and not preinstalled thanks.

everything i have seen is to install onto RT you need windows store and most apps have no access to the desktop therefore no legacy support even if the programmers wanted to port it over.

16Mb (EDO RAM), K6-II processor, 2Mb of onboard graphics. 32k dial up modem. 12 speed CD ROM. 5¼-inch floppy drive. 500Mb HDD.

My point is though that you can get apps onto the Windows RT devices without having to publish them into the Windows Store

You can sideload Metro^WModern Windows 8 apps onto the RT version, but not native ARM apps.

My point is though that you can get apps onto the Windows RT devices without having to publish them into the Windows Store



so what you are saying is that you are one of these people that try to start an argument about anythign they can but in this case fail because you are trying to make the same point i am lol.

edit: they could allow access to desktop for porting purposes,

OK sorry for replying then but I don't think I'm arguing just pointing out Windows RT is not locked down to only install apps from the Windows Store

I think the major difference between the RT and x86 versions of Surface will be price. Of course, the thing isn't on the market yet so it is all rumour.

The speculation I have seen suggests x86 pricing in line with what we see currently with Ultrabooks, so in the $1k ball-park here in NZ. Who know if the US$199 thing is real but with some sort of ongoing subscription for media delivery it may just work. Or it may be a ploy to get people used to Win8 and encourage desktop adoption.  

It looks like, and this is me speculating, that the RT version is being pitched at the consumer market. I don't think it is a truly direct iPad competitor because it has a built in keyboard and stand which suggests not so much using it while sitting in an armchair, but of course you can.

The x86 appears, more speculation, to be a pitch at the professional market. Lighter than a laptop but more functional that a traditional tablet. Yes, it will cost more but we are talking about a 'work machine' rather than a 'media consumption device'. So, if you travel a lot for work this could really be the thing. 

I'm now getting interested.
