Topic # 111277 29-Oct-2012 14:27 Send private message

Hi there,

I did originally post this is the main Windows 8 thread, but didn't get any replies. And probably rightly so, as it was probably going off the original topic a bit.
So I thought I'd re-post in a separate thread to gather other people's experiences if they've already been through this scenario.

Scenario:
I have 1 of 3 licenses of an Office 2010 Home and Student 3-user product on my current Win 7 machine. The other two licenses are registered and taken up on two other machines.
I would like to transfer this instance of the license to a new Windows 8 clean install on the same machine.

Question:
Will this be possible?
If so, what's the best way to go about it? Simply uninstall current license from current Win7 machine? Will this effectively 'free-up' one of the licenses to be used on the new/clean Win 8 install on the same machine? Is the Office install/uninstall system smart enough to de-register each unique instance of the 3 installs available when one uninstalls from a machine?
Will it not even matter, as the hardware ID (I assume this is what Office uses to register installs) will be the same?

BTW, not interested in doing an upgrade over the current Windows 7 install. I always like to start fresh with a new OS.

Just wondering if anyone has had any experiences doing this, or wondering if anyone knows the ins and outs of Office 2010 3-user licensing.

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

Follow these instructions for a clean install using the upgrade software

I'm after info regarding the transfer of the Office license, not on how to install Windows 8.
Cheers for the link in any case. :)

You shouldn't have a problem installing and activating the Office again, on the same machine.
If it won't activate online do it by telephone to the 0800 number and try activate it from there and if it still won't then speak to someone and explain that you are reinstalling it on the same PC and they'll give you the activation code.

Cheers, CYaBro.
That's what I'm hoping for (same machine, should activate fine).

Incidentally, does anyone know if the Unique Hardware identifier for my machine will change if the only thing I'm changing is installing Windows 8?

Should have read your post more thoroughly

Just install Office and use your existing keys. As CYaBro says, is should activate fine. Worst case scenario you have to give the 0800 number a call

Cheers for the replies.
Will give it a go in the next couple of days when I eventually get round to switching to Windows 8.
Will let people here know how it goes for any others in the same situation.

Just a quick update to say that I did a clean install of Windows 8 on the same machine, and have just re-installed Office 2010 Home and Student.

It installed and activated without any issues.
