Okay. most of you are probably going to say Reinstall your OS. I CAN'T.

So here's my story:

My C drive with windows 7 stuffed up, so i got a new hard drive which i installed. Then when I turned on my computer, and inserted my windows 7 cd, I got the error "Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device"

I keep pressing any key, and it keeps spamming me with that error. So I went into the bios, and yes, the cd/dvd drive was selected as first boot. The 2nd one was my hard drive. So I cannot reinstall windows, and I Don't know what the problem is, or how to fix it.

So please, someone help me. When I listed while it's giving me the error, the dvd isn't spinning and isn't making any sound. So that could be the problem, but I am not sure.

Please Help.

thanks.

Sometimes when you boot with a CD/DVD in the drive the BIOS will show a message similar to "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD". Are you missing this message?

Alternatively when booting you can hit F10 or ESC and then go to a Boot Menu where you can select which device to boot from, regardless of the list in BIOS.

I am not seeing the press any key to boot from blah blah.
Yea, and when I press f11, which we can choose where to boot from, there's 2 hard drives, and the cd. I press on the cd one, and still same message.

Did you perhaps knock the data cable for the DVDROM drive off the motherboard or from the drive itself when you installed the new hard drive?

SATA or IDE? And are you sure the install disk isn't damaged?

I've tried other disks, and still same problem.
EDIT: It's SATA

An alternative is to create an ISO from the DVD, install and run the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and create a bootable USB key. Then use the USB key to install Windows from.

You will need another PC to create the iso, install the tool, and obviously a 8GB USB key.

Interesting, because booting from the install USB shouldn't be any different than booting from the install DVD.

It sounds like some hardware problem there.

what is your hardware spec?

tried turning quick post off in bios and does it report anything?

done anything to the bios lately? overclocking or anything like that? reset to default is usually safe if you have.

Just Windows 7 on the machine or are you dual booting with Linux?

Boot to a command prompt, I usually use a bootable USB flash drive. Try some of the commands below :

chkdsk /r c:
Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

If you're dual booting with some other OS it'll more than likely remove the boot menu but may fix the booting issue.

Other thing to check in the BIOS and see what mode the HDD is in, AHCI would probably be best. Even resetting the BIOS defaults maybe the way to go.

I might just take it to a computer store to try get it fixed. I'm thinking it's the cd/dvd rom, because I don't hear the cd spinning.

Thanks guys for all your help, i really appreciate it :)
