Sorry but call me dumb, but where do I find baseline stuff like system performance, security and antivirus systems.

Why is there this big dichotomy between normal apps and tile sh1t.

Maybe Win8 is not for me, but I am really struggling to find any sense here, much more of this and I will be forced to look at apple systems.

Not sure what all the fuss is about myself.
I've been using win8 on my laptop for about two months now and while there was a bit of a learning curve I actually like it now.

Exactly, what are these guys smoking, is it me, or what.

Look, I have been around in this industry from way back, well before windows was even known, so I go along with things as they develop, and I must agree that Win7 currently is the pinicall of the Windows environment, but honestly, the abstraction layer that Win8 seems to protrude, is that really what we need, please someone tell me I am not some old git thats lost the plot, this is really Sh1t and we need to just tell MS, sort your sh1t.

You can start the Task Manager from the CTRL-ALT-DEL menu, or if you show the desktop right-click the taskbar.

An easy way to access all the Control Panel stuff is to create a desktop folder and rename it to Folder.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} (where "Folder" can be anything)... It will have all the Control Panel stuff in there...

Nope, it's certainly not just you! I think it's a disaster and so do most of my friends that have tried it.

Hi, glad I am not alone, look I have been with MS deployment since the early days of 3.11, and never have I found such a non comprehensible offering. So glad its just not me, but honestly this is total Sh1t.

Ok so now Ive made my point, time to move on.

I have Windows 8 here and many times thought if installing it. The main attraction points are the faster boot/shutdown processes and... pretty much that's it.

My HTPC won't get a Windows 8 update because the Media Center is dumbed down in this version.

I'm still on Windows 7 in my laptop and it works so well I see no reason to move from it. Any new laptop will probably get a downgrade with MSDN installs...

I've started testing win 8. Has anyone noticed that software installation in group policy doesn't work?

Seems to be that every second windows version is a dismal failure.

So there we are, you like me see Win7 as a pinncal in development, and I am sure it is, honestly its the best to date, but this Win8 thing, its seriously needs some work, its a object oriented developers wet dream, but sadly me and my machines are very procedural, so I dont see how I can move from here, maybe a call to Bill and have a serious talking too from an old fuzzy Bastard might help, otherwise I cannot see how I cannot issue a good wollop around the ears to fix this sh1t.

IMHO the biggest flaw was dumbing down desktop mode.

As I see it if you've got a touchscreen device you'll probably spend quite a bit of the time in Metro mode. If you don't you'll probably spend most of your time in desktop mode. Desktop mode should have remained completely unchanged complete with start button.

I hate Windows8 as well despite trying to like it.

Have you tried by just typing on the Metro screen? e.g. typing CO brings up all Settings, Files, and Apps with those letters in their name.  Simple really.

I started giving a good try from when the preview releases started coming out. There's some good stuff in there as far as speeding the system up is concerned but I found the metro to be extremely obtrusive and not particularly functional for desktop usage - especially when 99% of applications shell out to desktop mode anyway. For me, that obtrusiveness coupled with incompatibility with some of my software far outweighs any (not massively significant) speed benefits so Win7 stays here.

A bit OT but - I don't like where MS is going with WMC either. I use it constantly on my "HTPC" and have a media extender (HP x280n) which, while being an annoyingly slow and unreliable piece of hardware, is based around being a WMC extender. Perhaps it's time I got an xBox, but I have no interest in playing games so am reluctant to get one just for using as an extender. Microsoft clearly aren't that intrested in it so they should spin it off as a seperate entity so it can keep being developed and improved.

(I hate the ribbon bar in Office as well - so damned hard to find what you what quickly and easily!)

Despite all the clamouring, I doubt Microsoft will change what they've started. I doubt they'll introduce a switchable mode for metro either. They've drawn a line in the sand and that's that.
