heavenlywild: Is anyone having issues with shutting down? My PC doesn't shut down... the power light stays on and as soon as you use the keyboard you are back at the login screen. I have had to turn off fast boot to resolve the issue.

Yes, I have that too.  I can get it to shut down by using this command from an admin command prompt:

  shutdown /s /t 1

but the GUI shutdown option does not work and it just logs back in again.

shrub: Random Question but im kinda running a non legit version of 8.1 enterprise.
I want to do a fresh install and have an unused legit 8.1 professional key. Can i just go straight to windows 10 via a USB-ISO install or do i have to go 8.1Pro then upgrade to 10?

the later

You can use the downloadable ISO at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 which has an embedded product key.

Using that ISO, run SETUP.EXE *from within Windows 8.1 so that it can detect that you have a licensed, activated OS*.  Then when it asks what you want to migrate, choose “nothing” or “data only”.

That will result in a “clean” Windows 10 OS that can successfully activate.

If you do a clean install using Windows 10 media (any media) and never went through the upgrade process, you won’t have a license and the machine won’t activate.

I used this method and Im stuck being not activated because it has used this key instead of my windows 8.1 key so it doesnt know im allowed to upgrade....

Spent 30 minutes speaking to a lady using a potato as a phone in India who keep repeating that i need to go back  to 8.1 then choose the keep my files option, whic i did anyway when i upgraded
The she reverts back to the drone line of 'you need to wait another 24 hours and windows will activate automatically'.

The worst case of script reading ive ever encountered.

Update Im sill not activated but the other machines i did are.

This laptop I bought from Harvey Norman came with Win8 and i swapped the hard drive after 6 months to a SSD.
win8.1 was activated when i did the upgrade to win10 but its not happy

the method I described works.

Windows 10 cannot be activated with a Windows 8.1 key.

You do not need to use the option to keep your files to upgrade an activated 8.1 to Windows 10 and have an activated Windows 10

Im confused I used the media creation tool.

Ran the disc and setup and it asked me t keep my files which i did.
I assumed it would detect i have valid win8.1 and just install win10 and activate.

When running a PID checker on my win8.1 details held in window.old it say i have this below
Description : Win 8 RTM Core OEM:DM

which ever of those options you choose works, as long as it is run from inside a genuine activated 7/8/8.1

maybe you weren't on the internet when you did the upgrade

maybe your older OS wasn't detected as genuine/activated

when you roll back to previous and try again it still does not work?

I was connected in 8.1 when i started the upgrade
nathan: maybe your older OS wasn't detected as genuine/activated
Cant see why not - only anomaly is i changed my HDD to SSD recently

Dreading doing this due to the time it takes and risk of losing anything
