ftp.nz.debian.org redirects to citylinks FTP which redirects you to some US server which means international traffic and slow.

iHug's one doesn't seem to work, nor does slingshots one, anyone have a working one in NZ?

NZ Debian and Ubuntu mirrors seem to be an ongoing problem:

root@debian-vBox:~# aptitude update
----
----
----
Get:2 http://backports.debian.org squeeze-backports Release [77.6 kB]
Hit http://backports.debian.org squeeze-backports/main i386 Packages/DiffIndex
Err http://ftp.nz.debian.org squeeze Release.gpg
  Connection failed
Err http://ftp.nz.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main Translation-en
  Connection failed
----
----

Unable to open the following in a browser:

http://ftp.nz.debian.org/debian/
http://ftp.citylink.co.nz/debian/

However I can ping ftp.nz.debian.org (which resolves to ftp.citylink.co.nz).
The ihug mirror seems to be slow and sometimes doesn't respond.

http://debian.ihug.co.nz/debian/

Seems to be working at this moment (but not a few minutes earlier). I first noticed problems with ftp.nz.debian.org late last night (might have been early A.M.), but that was while using a debian wheezy armhf chroot and I thought perhaps the problem was specific to wheezy and/or armhf.

I'd like to stay with an nz mirror, but thinking ftp.au.debian.org might be a better option.

Perhaps I should mention that I'm on Orcon, but I'm not sure how much difference it makes, since I can access most other sites and can update my system after changing to ftp.au.debian.org.

Xnet have Ubuntu, may have Debian to? Can you use Ubuntu? If no one has Debian I may look @ it.

Looks like Slingshot's FTP mirror has Debian, not sure if it's accessible outside their network though: ftp://ftp.slingshot.co.nz/

Yes, it's accessible to all (or at least to Maxnet).

There's also a mirror from UoA for students.

I do recall not being able to swiftly wget ISO from the main ftp mirrors overseas.

Xnet appear to have archlinux, centos, linuxmint, opensuse, ubuntu and others.
http://mirror.xnet.co.nz/pub/

Some of it looks quite recent - ubuntu files updated 20-Dec-2012.

Slingshot looks promising. The site appears to host both i386 and amd64, although some files might be a bit dated perhaps. Not sure, perhaps the actual 'pool' area is o.k.
ftp://ftp.slingshot.co.nz/debian/

I'm also using debian armhf in a chroot on an HP Touchpad and soon will attempt to install debian armhf on a cubieboard, so might need to go elsewhere for those.

Oh cool a recent ubuntu mirror.  nz.archive.ubuntu.com has been lagging behind for ages, and nz2.archive.ubuntu.com not points to europe again.

So you end up needing to have multiple in.  You can speed up downloads, by having universe, multiverse etc going to different mirrors... you can do us.archive.ubuntu.com, us2.archive.ubuntu.com, us3.archive.ubuntu.com.  which will all go back to europe the same as nz2.archive.ubuntu.com.

there's also lots of mirrors at:

http://mirrors.arpnetworks.com/

in los angeles.  which is pretty fast.  and has openbsd, freebsd, centos, ubuntu.  works good as a second mirror when first nz mirror is out of date. :)

It looks like I messed up the copy/paste with that link.
Slingshot Debian link should be: ftp://ftp.slingshot.co.nz/debian/

Not sure if this is related or not but yesterday I had to change from the NZ repositories to the main repositories because nz.archive.ubuntu.com was down. Not sure if it's back up or not but it was stopping me from installing something I needed at the time. Pretty sure on installation I selected Slingshot as the server.

Slingshot is no longer in the list of servers which will explain why it wasn't working. I'd be about 99% sure it was there last week when I updated to 12.10

Both ftp.nz.debian.org and nz.archive.ubuntu.com resolve to citylink and both were down, but are back now.

Does nz.archive.ubuntu.com actually have any ubuntu?
Right now these two look the same.

http://ftp.nz.debian.org
http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com

Seems to be missing the http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

I've switched to the UC server due to it being local(ish) to my location. Not that it really matters on a rural Slingshot connection at 1.6MB down anyway, any server would happily take that.

Ubuntu is back again.

For Debian, I'm going to go back to using ftp.nz.debian.org as it seems a little more up to date than slingshot.
New bash for wheezy is here:
http://ftp.nz.debian.org/debian/pool/main/b/bash/
But not here yet:
ftp://ftp.slingshot.co.nz/debian/pool/main/b/bash/
