When buying from a daily deal site - can that site/business be held legally responsible under FTA/CGA for warranty service (as a retailer) if the company using the site to sell goods disappears or provides completely unacceptable level of service?

Who are you paying? That business is the retailer, and liable for CGA remedies.

I think it depends on the website, and who you are purchasing it from. eg who the contract is with which should appear on the invoice. I believe there are different types operating in NZ. Some are direct retailers, while others are just an introduction to the real seller.

I was considering a purchase on yazoom, but was wondering if there were any general principles applying in consumer law.

The warranty section 7 of yazoom terms and conditions appears to say something like:
a) we disclaim warranty of any kind
b) except for that required by law
c) we accept we have responsibility for warranty replacement / repair

grateful for any opinions on that.

Since payment is processed through those sites it appears to me the deal sites are acting as retailers and have responsibilities to live up to whatever warranty offer is being promoted.

The part that protects you is "As required by law".

The person who sends you the invoice is responsible.

INAL but with a number of these sites the invoice / payment is handed by the daily deal site, who take their chunk of the commission and then pass the $ on to the retailer involved. Under current laws this makes them liable, whether they like it or not.

I recently made a purchase that I believe was not "fit for purpose". I emailed the site (not the supplier) directly and they have offered me a full refund on return.
