Ok seriously, are you reading my replies? If you think lives could be at stake then call 111, that IS what it's for. Parking problems are NOT an emergency. A break in where the burglar is gone, is NOT an emergency. An Intruder in your house IS an EMERGENCY. Please try and understand.

Yup reading you loud and clear - I am talking about a fight or domestic violence in the neighbourhood...

If a car was blocking my drive at 2am in the morning I wouldn't call anyone - I would just smash it up myself!

and before you ask - no I'm not serious! :)

Explained here and re-quoted for your reference.

The fact your local council is relying on police to enforce this kind of thing is a bit of a scandal. Campbell Live could do a good beat up on that.

Ah. Just read down a bit and saw you are talking about 2am, that may be different. Here in AK I've seen council parking arrive with a tow truck and deal with it immediately during the day. No idea what happens at night here, maybe you should ask for comparison.

Is this an actual problem for you at 2am or is it an issue in the morning when you want to leave?

Imho traffic enforcement is more sensible after combining with police. In the old days I suspect a lot of activity occurred just because all those people had to be doing something all day. Now they can allocate those resources to what actually needs to be done.

Yes I agree with this, there was a problem when overlap occurred as well as MOT were not qualified or authorized to do anything other than traffic.

There were significant savings to be made in costs in not having 2 departments.

networkn: I am not happy getting a ticket for <10% over the speed limit, especially when we couldn't get someone to our house for a burglary, or at my office for the same, and for an assault I witnessed.

And this is one of the exact complains I made my post for to to attempt to dismay.

Can you assure me it wasnt a Traffic Sergant? Are you sure it was a priority assigned unit?

It is a common beleif that they all the cars out there are there do the exact same job and people are missing out on calls due to ticketing. No. Just no. There are frontline p1 cars, and there are general duty/traffic cars.

If a primary car HAS to pull someone over and dish out a ticket, they will do so. At the same time, if they hear a P1 call come in they will drop what they are doing (unless they have just killed someone or similar of course) it and goto the priority call.

If a traffic focused officer is doing a pullover, and a P1 comes in and there is no primary car available, he will finish what he is doing and go that way to assist (usually cautious for their own safety as they are mostly single crewed)

The biggest resource hog is a. Drunk people, b. Assaults and domestic violence. Theres usually so much garbage they have to listen to from multiple people at these types of events that they get tied up.

I have resepct for them being our own wife beater punching bag go-betweens. But thats simply what's doing the damage.

I was struck by this on Tuesday myself.
We are 1 of 6 left in 2 blocks in the redzone. We are advised to call in anything suspicious and assured we have security patrols. In the space of 1h15 after midnight I heard and saw 2 cars 'hooning' and then dive down an abandoned cul-de-sac, and start destroying something. I called it in, noone responded. And also no sign of Armourguard patrol within that time. Needless to say the local station is now looking into WHY, since I was able to tell them it was in progress, monitor. And then when they finally left *555 the registration, only to find them feeling a little bit silly as there was now a stripped dumped car (the one I reported doing burnouts) sitting there after not diverting a car when they could have caught them out.

networkn:

Yes I did, doesn't make any difference to me, if people didn't call for non emergencies they wouldn't spend resources dealing with them through the emergency channels. The fact they even had to setup a way to manage non emergency calls because it was being abused is just so wrong.

Towing companies will deal with blocked driveways.

It's nonsense that there are no other ways, you just need to learn how to escalate properly.

If towing companies clear yellow lines where cares are blocking drive way access then why don't the council staff and police know this and just transfer calls directly to the towing company?

I suspect the answer is because you're wrong.

iirc the police have to authorise the towing company in Christchurch to remove a car, which isn't going to happen when you can't get police attendance.

As for escalation, I shouldn't need to escalate this issue, but when I did need to I have no problems at all.  I simply called 111 and let the staff do their thing from there.

I shouldn't need to understand police protocol and processes to get a car moved that's blocking my drive way.

If people don't want me taking up 111 resource then perhaps they should consider where they park their cars?

From 111's point of view, I can understand why they're happy to take my call.  They're keener to hear from me than someone calling up to say "quick, send a car fast, some guys gone nuts and is smashing car windows and ranting about parked vehicles", a risk that I suggest they're attempting to offset.

I have a few friends that were once traffic officers and to a man (+ 1 woman) they all say it was a stupid mistake to combine traffic with police now you have 50% doing stuff they know practically nothing about and the other lot doing stuff they shouldn't have to
