Wait till the end of the month, better yet, wait till the end of March. Presuming the dealerships run on the March financial year model they will be bending over backwards to hit their sales targets (usually these are set in quarterly segments so July, November, March are all good months to buy. Go in mid-month...show some interest. Leave your number, don't answer the first couple of calls. By the 30th of the month, you should be into some nice new wheels at a better price.

Good luck!

Not BMW's apparently -- I went to buy a new one assuming they'd negotiate.

They wouldn't negotiate 1c on price, so , I didn't buy a BMW.

which dealership?

There are other things you can get them to throw in with a vehicle too, driver education courses for BMW, Holden and Ford. Or perhaps a good deal on a 2nd car that has been traded in. Depends on your position. A smaller dealership might sponsor your squash club or whatever. Think about what they have access to and who they know also think about what you have that they might want. I remember my mum got tickets to shows, meals out and a whole host of stuff because the owner of the dealership was quite well connected, she paid full retail but the dealership certainly looked after her in a way she really appreciated.
I think extended warranties and road side assistance are OK for some but if you have any technical or practical skills carry a jumpstart kit , spare key and a good toolkit and you'll more than likely be able to do most things the AA man can do on the spot.

to the op;

if you're looking at a hyundai i30 or vw golf.

forget the hyundai - they are still crap compared to the latest jap/euro cars.

if you have the patience to wait a couple of weeks the new vw golf mk7 is due for release.

an amazing car, it will be a game changer.

base price is $32,250 for a state-of-the-art euro car.

so why buy a lesser jap or korean car ?

Oh?  Have they finally figured out how to stop them breaking every five minutes?

I don't know how VW owners will cope as they will no longer be on a first name basis with the service department at their local dealer.

Seriously though, a friend has owned a number of VWs and the latest ones have all had regular visits back to the dealer for warranty repairs.

Also if the i30 is so crap, why did they win so many car of the year awards etc?  Don't make no sense.  I know older Hyundais were rubbish but I think they really busted out with the i30.

The problem with euros are they can be expensive to service and get parts for, and buying in NZ they are quite expensive anyway. Japanese cars do give you more bang for your dollar, and I think jap cars are better made and more reliable/cheaper to service and parts. Infact some eurpeon cars are now just rebadged jap cars anyway. ie Mitsubishi make some Peugeots, which is probably a good thing too.  The golf is OK but it isn't much of a looker and they are quite small. You would expect to get a decent discount off that price anyway.

I always find this annual study interesting when looking at reliability.  Scroll down to the graph at the bottom for a snapshot.  Not looking good for so-called 'premium' brands such as VW and Audi.

The boss doesn't seem to appreciate that if he provided me a Porsche  we would have less mechanical issues and downtime!  I will keep working on it :-)

For the price of a Porsche he could buy you a spare i30 and have cash in the bank to take his secretary to Vegas!

That is interesting. I don't see that it takes into account the type of uses that each brand is used for. Eg people probably take better care of their Porsches as opposed to their Jeeps. It would be interesting to see stats on models within those brands and geographic considerations also. eg One would expect a Hilux might give less trouble in Penrose than it would in Ruatoria. Certainly is appears to demonstrate a big difference between Toyota and Mitsubishi

Hyundai have definitely improved with their new models, and I think the latest dog and lemon guide acknowledges this. Although their pricing is also quite high now.

I would take any car of the year awards with a grain of salt.

This a fairly common relationship that most European car owners have..

Yes, but if you look at independent reviews like DriveSouth you'll find that the latest Korean vehicles tend to get very favourable write ups.

The i30 that I got as a rental up in Auckland last year was the outgoing model and whilst it wasn't a bad car I did notice a bit of vibration in the steering column and moderate road noise. From all accounts the new i30 is much more refined and compares well with the Ford focus which is widely regarded as the benchmark in that segment.
