Working fine for me on TelstraClear. Are you going to http://www.whitepages.co.nz or using a bookmark?

There you go. Refreshed the page and it's now showing the maintenance.

That is bad if it has been down for that long. Also website shows it hasn' t been updated since 2010. Many people don' t have the old school phone books these days. I wonder if the yellow apps for iphone etc are working?

At least they were thoughtful of my generation, and including instructions on how to use a phone book

Avoid that website like the plague. It's been awful for years, the results are never relevant due to their need to listen to where advertisers say their business _covers_ as opposed to simply where they're _located_.

Better results out of a mix of Google, Localist, Zenbu? and a couple of other data aggregators these days. (Businesses, if you're not online, you're losing out!)

White pages was working yesterday as i looked up an address. Perhaps they are taking it down to do upgrades two nights in a row- and you just checked at the wrong time, both times?

Back for me.

And I posted this on Twitter and got abused by their head of development:

So, was it four hours only or really a couple of days?

The yellow pages layout has vastly improved in the recent release, but they still have those geo issues you identify. For instance, if you are searching for a restaurant in an area the first results are takeaways that service the area. Similar problems for any other physical store you would like to visit. At least the new layout is a lot cleaner.

But we digress, this topic is about the white pages. There are some good things about the new release, but the advertising is deliberately not subtle and this makes the site painful to use. I'd like to be a regular user but I just grab the white pages off the shelf instead.

For businesses we just use Google these days. Last time I got the phonebooks we just dumped directly from the mailbox into the recycle bin (it was collection day, it didn't even stay in the property).

what is this 'yellow pages' thing? Is it some new upstart trying to compete with google?

Yup, agreed, we haven't used the White Pages or Yellow Pages for years, just Google everything. As for printed directories, I was told 5 or 6 years ago that the UK hasn't had printed directories for ages, hopefully we'll follow suit.

I don't remember the last time I used Yellow online. As to the books, occasionally I need a doorstop or something to stand on.

They're excellent for propping up monitors at the correct ergonomic height!
