An interesting thing happened to me at BP. I went to pay for my petrol with the company fuel card, I was holding my wallet in my left hand which was also holding the side of the keypad. It picked up the chip card in my wallet and the 4 lights started to do there thing, I had to move my wallet away at lightning ninja speed before it completed. Very close call, last thing I want to do is pay for petrol!! :)

My ANZ Visa Debit card doesn't work on them either. I hold it up, the lights go green, then it asks me to swipe/insert card. I feel so disappointed every time I go to buy something.

I asked about the visa debits failing, its because the merchant wont accept them processed via visa, the only way is via eftpos which is insert only. Richard rich.ms

I have an ASB Visa and it's worked fine at Countdown all times except once. On a particular instance it couldn't read my card for some reason so I had to insert and enter PIN. Apart from this, it's great. Saves A LOT of time compared to the previous: Insert chip card...... wait, wait...... enter PIN...... wait, wait...... remove card...... wait Accepted.

I tried to use my Amex at Countdown on a couple of occasions. Each time it told me to insert the card. Disappointed. Shadow Footprints: Wanderings in Virtu and Verity @Shadowfoot on Twitter

ASB Visa worked fine at Countdown to buy Marmite this morning after not working 2 days ago. As with my BP experience, it is the inconsistency that is the most frustrating!

So, I know a few of you travel often, what's the uptake of Paywave etc like overseas? I'm heading to the US & Europe in May, am I likely to encounter any/many of them over there? Is it worth getting the bank to issue me a paywave card, looking at the NZ experience so far, it doesn't seem worth the effort...

NFC is still in it's early days in Europe (and infact most of the world). Aussie is the most developed NFC market in the world with 10 million+ cards and 100000+ terminals. I've just come back from a holiday in Melbourne and would say that probably 75% of places I used my credit card had NFC terminals. Those that didn't were typically retail stores where the average spend would be higher than the $80 NFC limit. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? I have heard about coffee shops and chemists in the states using it (people talking about their expirences with google wallet) and I have seen McDonalds in London with the readers but that was in 2008 and they were branded Barclays so they might of been that brand only. I cannot recall seeing them much last year but I did not have a card capiable to doing the payments so I was not on the lookout for the readers. I wonder if this will save you signing for the purchses over seas like you have to do with the current system as it does not ask you for a pin in the current situation and if the $80 purchase still applies. I can't wait to start using the NFC on my phone for these transactions, is that sort of the idea? Or are their security concerns around it? I have ASB Visa Debit and haven't had one issue yet using it at BP and one of our local pubs have NFC too - very handy when the PIN pad gets hard to see lol.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the comments on this thread. Some of you have experienced problems with your Visa debit card while using payWave at some merchants and we’ve been looking into this. Currently Countdown and Kmart do not accept payWave transactions with NZ issued Visa debit cards – instead you will be prompted to insert your card into the terminal and enter your PIN number to process the transaction. Credit cards are not affected - if you have an ASB Visa Gold or Platinum, or a MasterCard (Standard, Low Interest or Gold) you should be able to use the contactless technology as normal. You will still be able to use your Visa debit cards at other merchants offering contactless payments such as BP, The Warehouse, Bunnings etc. We’ll keep you posted with any further developments. Pubs are a great application for NFC. Low value, fast, low light makes pin hard, etc. Asus eee pad transformer iPod 2G Windows 7 PC Lots and lots of Nikon camera gear

Speaking of Countdown... has anyone used their self checkouts? They're ok for a couple of small things, but they're frustrating for more than that. I use large reusable bags, half the time it doesn't detect that I've put something in the bag. It makes you put each item down before you can scan a new one as well, which I guess is good to prevent theft and errors, but is frustratingly slow for honest people who can use two hands at a time.
