gzt: Is anyone else sickened by the whole circus? I just find it so ridiculous.

I would mind a lot less if they were celebrities and not only because they would be paying for their own holiday.

The sad reality is they are here as representatives of New Zealand's head of state The Queen and therefore hosted at the expense of the state. The constitutional arrangements I find far less objectionable than this horrible charade. Ban it.

Good luck! Your best bet is for NZ to become a republic.

Then we get presidential politics

Isn't that what we get now??

I guess after this tour is finished all the organizers will be holding out their hands for a royal honor on Queens birthday weekend..

Unfortunately, the royals were invited here by our Govt to have a very nice holiday at our expense, in return for opening a couple of buildings, patronising a few peasants, providing some free PR, and such-like duties.

Whilst to most of us this is a waste of money, from the Govt's point of view it is a great investment because they believe that a feel-good royal tour will win them votes.

That republic arguement is ludicrious.

Becomming a republic solves nothing and would be stupidly expensive, at the best you just replace one Figurehead Head of State with another. At the worst you end up with a deadlocked democratic system like the states.

The constatutional monarchy we have right now is one of the better systems out there at the moment it offers a wide representation and is mostly transparent.

We spend more per week dealing with the results of the binge drinking than what was invested in the tour.

They are here at our cost because they are representing our head of state (the Queen)...

If you don't like that - don't take it out on them… You need to look at how our Government is put together and make some changes to remove them from that post… Until then - we live with it...

Did you know (side note) that internationally the people googling about coming to New Zealand has increased 150% while they have been here… Could be a good investment from that point of view...

I invite anyone who thinks becoming a republic is a good idea to tell me who they'd suggest for President… That seems to be a problem...

I don't know about who could be President, but if somehow Prince Harry was to become King, can you imagine the inauguration party? That'd be worth every tax payer cent spent on it

How about instead or a Republic, NZ becomes a Meritocracy?

Pretty simple. We become a republic without a president. We really don't need one of those elected or not. Aside from a good idea or not it seems inevitable so it should be given some thought about exactly how.

But surely a Meritocracy would be better than a Republic without a president, we would have intelligent people at the top that have been vetted to make sure they suit the needs of their position.

It's is a lot cheaper than having a president and all the rubbish that goes with that. I think we get get value out of the royal family, and this is shown by (a) all the coverage they are getting and (b) by all the people who are turning up to see them.

Meritocracy ? No thanks,  IQ does not equal good sense or the ability to interact or any  leadership skills.

Basically a loopy idea

Ability to interact and leadership skills don't mean squat if you have no idea what you're doing.
