Trump’s ‘armada’ heading to North Korea was really off Australian coast

"The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier that the Trump administration had said was steaming toward North Korea was actually conducting exercises off the coast of Australia, a U.S. defense official acknowledged Tuesday"

More lies, or more ignorance?  undecided

Going by the article, a mixup with the unnamed defence official, Mattis, Pentagon and the Navy. Hopeless.

Please, you guys, stop directing me to all those Trump f..ups. You are scaring the living daylights out of me!

Seriously, it is so unbelievable that this ignorant, lazy imbecile could lead us into a nuclear war of utter destruction.

America, what have you done.

There is a strategy in war called confusing your opponent. Thing is, sometimes you confuse your own army.

Who confused them? Wasn't Trump on this occasion

Fred99:

It's a numbers game.  A THAAD battery has 48 interceptors (at what price? $20 million US each), DPRK has an unknown number of (presumably cheap DIY) missiles from modified Soviet era SCUDs,  through to more modern solid-fuel rockets. Total number could be thousands. They are also claimed to have chemical (we know they have some VX) as well as biological weapons (weaponized anthrax).

If THAAD works as planned, then it's supposed to be able to determine which missiles have nuclear warheads (vs dummies), but at this stage it's not known if DPRK have a miniaturised warhead.  It is known that they can't have many of any type, as they're limited by their own plutonium production.  They threaten "thermonuclear war" - but it's highly unlikely they've got a thermonuclear weapon, so for that part, if they launched a nuclear (fission) strike, the thermonuclear war would be one way traffic directed at them.

So, in the unlikely (at this time) event that DPRK actually has a miniaturized warhead and a delivery system, THAAD would be of some use to prevent nuclear attack, but meanwhile a fleet of cheap missiles rains down on South Korea, loaded with chemical, biological, or conventional warheads.  All hypothetical as for all posturing and threats, both sides want to avert it.  As each side increases their military strike and countermeasures, tension escalates.  The only time it seems tensions de-escalate is when they talk together. The path to a peaceful solution is a no-brainer - and Trump clearly has no brain.

Its not a Trump issue, its a decades old issue. So far he has done nothing amiss as regards Syria, Afghanistan, or PRNK. Not one thing actually. For PRNK what they say and do is BAU. The West or US Talking with them will never happen, the closest it can get is China talking to them

It is a Trump issue - not saying that it's unique or unusual for a Republican POTUS to be going in swinging swords, and as we've seen, Obama was also rattled by DPRK's nuclear programme and clueless to do anything - not helped by a conservative South Korean government.

The closest that "we" (the rest of the world) can get to talking with them is to reopen dialogue between South Korea and DPRK, with support of PRC as ally/trading partner to both, with the objective of reunification, hopefully liberating the 25 million or so subjects of DPRK.

That would seriously p*ss the USA off, as a precondition would be that a united Korea shouldn't continue to be an Asian outpost for the US military and a huge market for their weapons industry.

This short video is from Michio Kaku, talking about the H1B visa, which lets highly skilled immigrants work in America.

The H1B visa is what Trump is trying to restrict, so "Americans can get jobs."

RollingStone - Trump's Terrifying North Korea Standoff

"What makes the current moment particularly worrisome is that the leaders of both countries can be described almost identically: rampant narcissists and ultra-nationalists with bad haircuts who love to play with military toys."

To make the comparison - as a significant point of difference - Trump hasn't been killing family members.  OTOH he's certainly decided that running the USA (and thereby the most influential position in what used to be the "free world") should be a family affair.

Of course nothing like a bit of war to garner support from the morons who think that long-term, actions of the past couple of weeks make a positive difference to world peace and stability. Dropping bombs to prove that you can drop bombs and suchlike - with no apparent "part II" where to make a meaningful difference, you'd need to do something altogether much harder than press launch buttons and blabber.

But it works, Trump's "approval rating" has risen from about 37% to about 43% - so greater than the +/- 3% margin of error.  Unfortunately it's still a dismal approval rating - so I guess we can expect more bombs and displays of military might, until at least 2018 mid-term elections.  Not the first POTUS to do that - and unfortunately he probably won't be the last.

Meanwhile Trump is getting in behind Le Pen in the wake of the idiot who opened fire on the policemen in Paris.  Note how quickly ISIS moved to "claim responsibility" for that attack, vs their usual slowness.  I presume that they normally delay, as the speculation about "who's responsible" stirs media attention, then as media attention wanes they get a new headline when they fess-up.

It's remarkable how people seem to think that hard-liners on immigration/refugees and (ultra) nationalists are going to solve "the problem". They actually are the problem - ISIS want full on conflict - they think it's destiny - and that they're going to win, so bring it on.  They want French people voting for Le Pen.

I can't quote for some reason, no quote button.

I can't see any swinging swords. Apart from NK.

We can talk to NK as has happened. Deal if food and oil, reduce sanctions. Then it starts over.

United Korea? That would be great but NK doesn't want that as that's basically a regime change. China won't as it's a Korea managed by SK.

It takes time for talk and agreements to work. Northern Ireland and the IRA/UDA etc is a good example. Disarmament talks were derailed by both sides several times and got back on track. It takes a lot of commitment to go back to the table.

USA under Bush walked away. That was a big mistake in my opinion.

Mike Pence has upped the ante standing on an aircraft carrier saying USA will respond to conventional weapons use also. This means there is now a context for USA to respond to any border exchange. It's a very minor incremental change, but there is no doubt it is an escalation in tension.

Yeah let's talk about it. After all NK is no more than annoying, it's the US that is being hard nosed year in and year out.
Talk to poor NK and get this sorted

tdgeek:

Yeah let's talk about it.

Never heard Trump string together a coherent argument for anything - but he's great on abuse and threats.

Oh - and bombs.

He's saved Syria and brought peace to Afghanistan recently.

My comment was obviously facetious. NK talk about it? Never.

It isn't a Trump issue anyway. If Trump did something ok, normal, standard, bau you would cut him down. If he did something g good, you would cut him down. I am well aware of his many faults but there is no discussion if the bias is this extreme

As to Syria, many have no issue there, for what was a very very very small token response. NK is the same. Everything there that was commented by Trump or the WH and action, is a small fraction of what comes from NK.

It's fine to hate Trump, hate the US, but it's not a great discussion if it's only about venting that. And for some here that's what it is.

Your comment was sarcastic.

You're supporting Trump's sabre-rattling stance based on ignorance:

The two Koreas have talked about unification in the past.
