I also got round to seeing The Dark Knight Rises on the weekend.  I would give it a solid 8/10.

For me, The Dark Knight is one of my favourite films of all time.  It has a great story which unfolds in chapters over the course of the film, and builds upon its strengths as it progresses, with really great characterisation, and some epic set pieces.  So it was always going to be hard for The Dark Knight Rises to top its predecessor.  I don't think it managed it, but it still holds its own, it stands as a great film, and is a great way to close off Nolan's trilogy.

I think the strengths of the film are the way it draws you into the story, and makes you think about the motivations of its characters.  It's always a challenge when there are so many principal characters (Bruce Wayne, Jim Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, Lucius Fox, and new characters Miranda Tate, Selina Kyle, Bane, John Blake), but I think they did well to make each character seem real.  I was a little disappointed to see so little of Alfred and Lucius, but it's almost inevitable when the film and cast are ambitious as they are.

I've heard a few people comment on the character of Selina Kyle.  I noted that no where in the film is she referred to as Cat Woman.  She is described as a cat burglar, but she's not a "superhero", she's a cat burglar with a distinctive outfit.  It might be a departure from conventional interpretations which see her transform into some kind of cat-based superhero, but I quite liked the fact that all of the heros and villains in Nolan's trilogy are very human.  Batman isn't injected with a mysterious substance to make him strong or powerful, he just works out, uses his financial resources to build the gadgets he needs, and uses his brains.  Bane, Joker, and Scarecrow aren't mutants or weird creatures - they are humans with human frailties and ambitions.  So I liked that Anne Hathaway played Selina Kyle, rather than Cat Woman - it was consistent with the rest of the trilogy's approach, and it made her character a bit more believable.

Without giving away spoilers, the ending of the film was a pretty good way to close off the trilogy.  It provides closure for the main characters, and allows Nolan to walk away having directed (and co-written) a complete story arc that is complementary (as far as I know) to the existing mythologies, whilst leaving the door open for a future director to craft their own story in his universe, with a new set of actors if necessary.  I feel very happy and satisfied with the trilogy, and can't wait for it to come out on blu ray so I can watch it again.

I've recently seen:

The Space Battleship Yamato. Simply outstanding it was Manga with real actors and very Japanese. Well worth it.

Four Lions. Funny, laugh out loud and snort funny. Possibly the most politically incorrect film ever but still funny.

Ted : 7/10 - If you like crass humour, then this will amuse :) Story was pretty average really, but the language coming out of a teddy bears mouth...well... it made it worthwhile ;)

Going through the bottom of the stack..

The Guard. 5.5/10. Big city UK cop has to move to a small town because his stats are too high and making the other cops look bad. Got it because I enjoyed Shaun of the Dead with mostly the same cast - not a fan of zombie movies but enjoyed the humor in that one. Not so The Guard. Sparse, uneven, and not really my sense of humor.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Norwegian CSI/SVU with additional sexual brutality. Ugh. Not very nice.

Are you sure it's The Guard?  Sounds more like Hot Fuzz...

The Guard is about a FBI agent visiting a small town and getting his head around the unorthodox way the local cop works...

Yeah that's what I thought too, I haven't seen The Guard so I'm not sure but it certainly sounds like Hot Fuzz.

Yeah, the review for was Hot Fuzz lol. Watched The Guard last week as well ;  ).  Same feelings and ratings for both of them. Hot Fuzz is an English production. The Guard is an Irish production. Enjoyed The Guard slightly more because of the Irish setting.

[Edit: Shaun of the Dead has Dylan Moran, Hot Fuzz does not]

Brave = 8/10

Really enjoyed. The kids even laughed which is rare for a movie. Highly recommended by both the kids and adults.

Why not a higher rating - I found the contrast to be to high at the cinema so the picture quality was not as good as I would have expected. Also got a bit dull 3/4 in but was not for long.

I just saw TDKR on Tues with the Mrs. I tend to agree with the majority of posters here in that it didn't quite pull off the ending of the series as good as it could have.

One nit-pick from me: all three of these movies were in 'Gotham City' I didn't think there was any real continuity of the 'look and feel' of GC between the three movies. What do you all think?

If there was one redeeming feature of the Tim Burton Batman it was the visuals of Gotham City, alright Jack Nicholson's Joker was pretty cool too, and this was carried on to a greater or lesser degree in the following films.

Nolan's Gotham looks much more generic, like any other American city but darker of course. I can see where you are coming from but I think the Nolan Gotham is more of a background and it also fits the style of the current movies which could be described as 'realist'.

After reading an earlier post on watching Star Wars Machete order I was intrigued and finally got a few mates around to watch them in this order and I have to say it was a lot better. I actually felt a lot more engaged in episodes II and III than I had ever experienced before. I'd also come to appreciate just how much the lightsaber battles had improved. The original episode IV fight between Obi Wan and Vader looked like two geriatrics having a tiff. Don't get me wrong though the original trilogy is still far superior in almost every other way.

Overall I give Star Wars Machete order 9/10

I have also been a bit of a comic to movie addict in the last few weeks and have watched the following.

The Punisher: OTT violence about a man seeking vengeance. Not your typical hero but still enjoyable 7.5/10

The Amazing Spider-Man: Better than I had though it would be and better than the originals and I thought they actually did a good job with the Lizard as the antagonist. Also rather well cast. 8/10

The Dark Knight Rises: First of all I consider Christian Bale the best Bruce Wayne ever portrayed in a live action film, however I cannot forgive that voice he uses for Batman. I found myself laughing at certain parts of the film that you're not supposed to be laughing at. As for the others, Bane was good but nothing in comparison to Heath Ledger's Joker, Michael Caine was excellent but wasn't in it enough and Anne Hathaway pulled off a surprisingly good Catwoman Selena Kyle. Overall I give it 8/10
