Four Lions 9/10
Actually i have this on dvd and every time i want a laugh i load this movie up. 4 lions is a hell of a funny film which you all probably heard about since it came out a few years back. If not its about 4 British Muslims who want to go the jihad way. Total losers that will have you falling of your seat laughing.

Coriolanus 9/10
Shakespeare's Coriolanus, Ralph Fiennes as Coriolanus is the star here, Gerard Butler as the rebel. Its setting is modern day guns, urban warfare don't let that put you off as it works in this film. Excellent.

Four Lions was one of the stand-out laugh out loud movies of last year for me :) In fact I think I gave it a micro-review in this very thread :)

I was given free tickets to The Campaign. It was alright, I'm glad I didn't pay actual money for it: it more of a rent-when-it-comes-off-new-release flick. Unless you think Will Ferrell is a comedy genius.

5/10 - it didn't make me want to demand 90 minutes of my life back, so its an improvement on some of Ferrell's other work.

Battle: Los Angeles. Alien invasion. Small group of marines tasked with escorting a few civilians out of danger. It does not go well. Simple plot but enough action and tension along the way to keep the interest. Would def watch a sequel. 6/10.

Bourne Legacy 7.5/10

Was a strange one, better than I expected. Was watching the movie and all of a sudden the credits rolled. It just didn't feel "resolved" to me, but plenty happened. Decent Action. Rachel Weisz Yummy! Jeremy Renner, better than I expected.

The Three Musketeers (2011) - 6/10

Nobody is ever going to call this a cinematic masterpiece but for $1 on Blu-Ray it was a fun way to spend the evening.

It it more 'inspired by' than 'based on' the book, but the book really isn't all that exciting so no harm done there. It is completely nonsensical, 'airships', but that's fine too.

Pretty much does what you would expect.

Networkn - Do you think they are setting Bourne up for another three film run? Personally, I liked all three of the last ones.

gehenna: Four Lions was one of the stand-out laugh out loud movies of last year for me :) In fact I think I gave it a micro-review in this very thread :)

The part where they're in the garage and one of them is explaining how he disguised himself as a woman by covering his beard with his hands, gets me in fits laughter every time. :D Best comedy scene ever!

Anyway Snow White and the Huntsman 7/10

For me the two female roles should of been switched round Kristen Stewart would of made a better witch & Charlize the better snow white. Charlize didn't come across as evil enough for me, Kristen big speech near the end encouraging the troops to take arms etc was terrible.

For me it was the bit where the older English guy proves how 'for real' he is by driving his car into a wall. Just pushed me over the edge into hysterical laughter.

I can imagine myself not wanting this Snow White to wake up.

Cabin in the Woods - 9/10

After thinking we would never get this film in Palmerston North, I was stoked to see it here on Friday night as part of the International Film Festival.  I'd heard very little about it, other than it was a great film, to avoid reading about the plot (for maximum appreciation, don't even watch the trailer). and that it involved Joss Whedon.  For once, the experience matched the hype.  I loved this film, and would happily watch it again.

I'm not going to go into any plot details (to try and preserve the experience for anyone else who hasn't seen it), so there's not much I can say.  It is ostensibly a horror film, but unless you are of a specially weak constitution, don't be put off, because the horror isn't that horrific (IMO).  If you've seen any of Joss Whedon's TV series (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse), you'll be right at home here.  If you don't like Whedon's style of film and storytelling, then maybe it's not for you.

The acting is perfectly matched to the tone of the film, and for Whedon-ites, you'll have fun spotting his regulars amongst the cast.  Some of the cast include NZ's Anna Hutchinson, and Thor's Chris Hemsworth, and I reckon everyone did a pretty good job.  For those of you who keep an eye out for post-credit sequences, there's none here (we stayed until the very end of the credits, and there was nothing).

The only problem I had with the film, is that I can only see it for the first time once.  I'm definitely going to watch it again when the blu-ray comes out, but I won't be able to have that same, first-time experience.  Unless I get amnesia.  Come on, amnesia!

The Secret History of 9/11
Not a conspiracy production as the title might suggest. Based on findings of the 9/11 commission and includes interviews with military pilots, whitehouse and intelligence. On the day the only people on to it were the professionals at air traffic control. The rest of the command and response structure was a complete bust. President at one stage borrowing a cell phone to try to contact the whitehouse lol.

The Bourne Legacy - 6/10

I really enjoyed The Bourne Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum, and I really wanted to like this continuation of the story, with Jeremy Renner at the helm, but I think it ultimately falls short of the mark set by the first three films.

First off, I think this film is an excellent example of the discrepancy between the trailer and the film.  The trailer had me amped for a good, solid action film, but it took a long time for the film to actually show any decent action.  The trailer is also a bit misleading - it set me up for something of an origin story, going into the history of the secret programmes such as Treadstone and Blackbriar.  But instead the storyline driving the film is chopped up and sprinkled throughout the movie, seemingly at random, and you're constantly looking for the links to bring it all together.  If the film had been edited to match the trailer, then I think it would have been a much stronger film.

I also noticed a lack of sound to the film.  Whereas the first three Bourne films had a distinctive background sound driving the atmosphere, Legacy had a noticeable absence of scene-setting music.  And then to cap it off, they tacked on the Moby song from the first three films at the end, just to remind us that it's a "Bourne" film.

One of the other characteristics that I enjoyed about the first three films, which was absence from Legacy, was it's international/Euro feel.  All three films felt to me like they were trekking the globe, and presented different countries without being US-centric.  Legacy didn't really feel international in scope, and was the lesser for it.

My final gripe is with Jeremy Renner's character, Aaron Cross.  I never thought I'd say this, but he makes Matt Damon look like a genius.  Where Damon's Bourne is a very reserved, mostly calm, character, with grim determination, dedication, unwavering focus and a deliberate, precise aspect to his actions, Renner's Cross felt very haphazard and random, reacting rather than determining his own path.  I know his character is not Bourne, but they are supposed to be born out of a similar purpose and programme, and I just couldn't see the connection.  All the other Treadstone agents shared Bourne's deliberate characteristics, but Cross seemed too random to be a special agent with anything other than some beefed up muscles.

It's disappointing, overall, because I really wanted to like this film, but I can't really warm to it.  I'll just stick to Damon's films, and hope they bring him back to the role at some point...

Out of the blue
Aramoana massacre drama. Once events begin it is unsettling because it is not sensationalised. A bit of interpretation is used to display the gunman's state of mind but other than that the events unfold in an ordinary way.
