This story is all about upload speeds. The majority of New Zealand will not have access to UFB for some time, but VDSL is available now to most broadband users. To use the cloud efficiently, upload is critical and ADSL is too slow at under 1Mb/s. VDSL upload at 6+Mb/s is competitive with basic cable service - 15/2 and if priced well is a very nice product. JohnButt: VDSL is available now to most broadband users Wheres the figures and sources to back up this statement about most broadband users having VDSL available to them at this point in time? Seems like a non-factual throwaway statement to me, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong. I would have thought that with VDSLs limited reach along the copper, combined with only a select few ISPs offering it, that it would be available only to a very small percentage of people.

57% was the coverage at the beginning of 2009 with 84% targets by the end of the cabnetisation project according to this: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/small-business/news/article.cfm?c_id=85&objectid=10554319 (one would hope those are official figures from Telecom\Chorus) I would guess they're pretty close to those figures these days, though it would be good to see some official figures that are more recent. ISPs not offering it hardly seems like an issue - people can change ISPs.

57% was customers with access to Telecoms 'Next Generation Network', it didn't mention that figure as VDSL specific accessibility. The rest of the VDSL talk in the article was future plans. Does anyone have any data to support the original posters claim?

Which is I believe from a Chorus press release, though I can't find the original, though it's quoted in multiple places.

I believe that VDSL2 is available to around 45% of lines in total. I haven't heard an exact number, this is merely a figure told to me around 18 months ago and could have changed as the target dB level has changed several times. In a cabinetised area this % is way higher as the vast majority of lines are within 1km. Off an exchange these nearby get service, but exchange coverage areas also extend beyond the cabinetised footprint so the total % is dragged down significantly. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? In an NBR story Mark Ratcliffe put that figure even higher. Perhaps a bit lower than I would have thought based on their targets for Cabnetisation coverage (80%) and the 50% 500m/90% 1km figures. Or is that percentage also likely to be dragged down by equipment (DSLAMs etc) not supporting VDSL2?

Just with Orcon would offer me VDSL. I'm pretty much on the border of the 1KM zone and even if I don't get full upload speeds I'd be very happy to have more than my current ADSL2 link Down 14Mbs Up 900Kbs Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat New Zealand as a Solution Architect for all things Linux, Virtual and of course Cloud. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

The 1km figure is misleading i reckon. I'm about 400-500m from a cabinet, and if you go by chorus maximum attenuation dB (around 10-11 or something?)as a hard cut off limit, i can't get VDSL2. And thats with a central splitter and a 18-20mbit ADSL2+ syncrate, which is definitely not that common.

Hi, I am almost exactly 900m from Eastbourne exchange - see Days Bay Homestay on google maps, the exchange is just past Muritai School :-) BTW, Home is all new Cat 6 to a central patchpanel, including out to the aerial drop.
