Topic # 113895 31-Jan-2013 11:04 Send private message

Was talking to folks from Chorus and Snap Internet yesterday while attending Sir Tim Berners-Lee session at Te Papag and we started talking about VDSL and UFB coverage.

Mark (Snap) asked if we have VDSL coverage here and I checked today:

Just outside it. Obviously can't get it from the back of the property (the little triangle tip) as it's a cliff.

Anyone else having similar kind of situation and want to moan, now's the time ;)

I'm two streets outside VDSL coverage.. In Miramar the whole peninsular was cabinetised apart from the area I live in.  Miramar in general is years away from being on the UFB Plan....  Yet what am I building as part of my day job.  Rant over...

I work for Telecom, but as always my views are my own.

That's the Chorus SAT. It's the same one they were going to kill but I was told last night that after reading the feedback they are actually going to improve it even more.

Get a master filter installed... then your problem should go away.. otherwise ring up your ISP and get Chorus around to check the line back to the exchange.

According to Chorus, I'm smack bang in the middle of a VDSL area. UFB will also be available at my address in Feb.

You'll probably all hate me for saying that we're gonna still be using ADSL for the foreseeable future.

I wouldn't hate you. We use TelstraClear HFC here and have been using 100Mbps for a couple of years, even before UFB became available.

But I was offered the chance to get VDSL installed as a second connection, perhaps as a backup, to test it.

My house is surrounded by VDSL on all sides, but I'm in a purple "island" on the map. No UFB scheduled for here for a while yet either :(

it's a single direct line (one jack point), it's 14 megabit at the road, and it was 14 megabit inside, it's gone down to 13 megabit now.

will chorus actually fix the lines to the exchange if it's over 10 megabit?  i tried to ask chorus about it when they were here.

600 metres from cabinet, on the same street as the cabinet, on the same side of the road as the cabinet, 17db down, 5.4db up attenuation.  attenuation was slightly less earlier.  although there's two cabinets next to each other.  maybe i'm plugged into one with longer lines on it?

Man I really feel for you guys, I was one of the first sites connected to VDSL I literally jumped out of my skin when I found it. My office however is 1 attention point from being VDSL acceptable which would have saved me $300 a month over the wireless system I ended up implementing.

I am hoping against hope that with VF buying TCL, that a lot of the city addresses (Auckland CBD) might be livened up for a smaller cost than TCL is offering, as there is a lot of Fibre which was paid for, and not in use. Perhaps I just don't understand, but surely getting ANY money for the use of that Fibre would be better than nothing? If they offered Fibre at twice the price of UFB, it would still be half the price of even the cheapest Chorus Fibre connection, I am sure they would have great demand.

Must be a geekzone curse to be just outside VDSL coverage.

I'm near the end of a street with no VDSL.
Street 100m to the North-West is on a VDSL2 cabinet.
Street 100m to the South-West is on a VDSL2 cabinet.
