Please reboot your ADSL router & wait five minutes before you call your ISP about connection issues, regardless of whether you have a PPP light on or not.

No exceptions (ESPECIALLY NOT FOR IT GUYS). Please. We love you.

But my $50 Router from the warehouse has never had a problem, ever, it is your $10K worth of gear between me and your core, or your $250K auth and border controller.

And because of this outage I want free interwebs for a year!!!!!!!!!

It applies for ALL technology - if its not working properly, restart it before ringing the helpdesk... so many calls I get from staff who havent restarted their PC before calling me.....

The worst thing is that helpdesk support is one of the biggest costs for an ISP.
If 80% of calls can actually be solved by a modem reboot, then that is costing the ISPs a lot of money to resolve very simple things, and will show up in the price of the internet for everybody.

They used to but everyone complained that they had a flaky modem that kept rebooting its self... ;P Anyone read Catch 22?

I would be very angry if my internet was offline since christmas eve and I had never thought of restarting the modem or calling the ISP on a day that wasn't a statutory holiday! Ok, so yeah it wasn't me but apparently still my service at fault...

Haha love the video - the internet looks like it was built by Linksys. Problem when the wife calls me at work, is that there are several things with blinking LEDs that could be at fault - the cable modem, the router, the wireless AP, or the laptop...

A VoIP solution is the clear answer to this problem. ;)

1. Wife calls...
2. Reset cable modem...
3. VoIP connection dropped...
4. Return to normal programming...

Last year Belkin launched a series of routers with a "self healing" feature. I had one here for a test and found out it's actually a "middle of the night self restart" cron-type job on the router...

It heals everything...
