When asked in an event in Australia why does Adobe charge more for its software in AU/NZ, its CEO could come with no answer. So this is what was recorded:

Just look at the guy in the background, trying not to laugh at the answer.

Granted, other companies behave in the same way, including Microsoft and game distributors such as Steam and others.

Instead of saying something like "Oh, really? Let's fix this thing", he goes on a tangent explaining how the future is the Creative Cloud, and how the whole offering is a great value and on and on...

When the guy in the background interrupts asking if there are any other questions, another journalist asks the same thing in other words: "can you rule out reducing prices for your non-cloud products?"

Laughable, how these folks get to be CEO: it's all in delivering a non-message.

I bought CS6 from the US via volume licensing... of 1 copy. It was the cheapest and easiest way. I just used a VPN and the address 1600 Pennsylvania Ave...

They are being taken to task about it now by the Australian Federal Government. About time really, i hope this has some precedent here for us as well, considering a lot of our stock is sourced from Australian distributors it should mean better prices for us as well.

Source

"Until now the tech giants have refused to publicly front the IT pricing inquiry but today the federal government subpoenaed the companies, forcing them to explain why Australians have to pay so much more for goods than their US and UK customers.

In what's probably the first time anywhere in the world, these IT firms are now being summoned by the Australian Parliament to explain why they price their products so much higher in Australia compared to the US.

We found that with one Microsoft software development product, you could fly to Los Angeles return, to buy the software and still save thousands of dollars."

I know of at least one company that buys all its Microsoft software licences through its US subsidiary and saves 30% across the board.

It's digital - it shouldn't cost more to deliver in NZ beyond some minor variance for price points.

We are being ripped off and our government should launch an inquiry much as the Aussies have done.

I can accept a difference in physical goods pricing - shipping etc adds to the cost. But digital?

They have a very good reason for charging more over here - because they can.
Something something, market forces, something, invisible hand, trickle-down, something.

It might well be time to slap the invisible hand that's reaching for our wallets before it grabs all our cash!

30% markup across the board. $300+ to ship each laptop and $6000+ to ship each car?

the rort is deeply entrenched. digital industry won't lose a few bucks if their hard ware counterparts make much more.

I think.

I once tried to buy a camera for work. It was cheaper to fly to LA, have a week's holiday in Disneyland and then fly home, buying the camera along the way that it was to buy it in New Zealand.

It staggers me that we're in the position.
