Have you tried the Disk Utility on a Linux Live CD? That's what I always use to partition my drives. Surely that would pick up the second partition?

Have you tried to do to Disk management? Can you see the full 2tb there? Sounds like the drive had 2 partitions so check there. You should be able to format the partitions that you deleted. And you should be able to merge it as well.

You can also use diskpart from command prompt.

Geez guys thanks for all your quick responses but I am not a techie and whereas I am quite happy to install windows based software on my main work machine when i start  seeing the old dos type screens i get nervous. Trolling the net this seems to be a somewhat common problem I would have thought that WD would have a download and fix program. I ve tried about 6 different disk utilities of the net Damm !! it would have been cheaper just to buy a another 2 tb drive rather than use the external

anyway do I spend the next three hours trying to figure it out (what I know will take a tec 10 mins to fix if that ) or do I sell it on trademe as a screwed drive you fix it???

Do This Step by Step

NOTE: ** This will format the drive so make sure you backup your data.

If you get stuck let me know.

Start -> Run -> cmd (and press enter)

When the black box comes up type Type: diskpart

Another box will come up.

Type: list disk

Here you can see all the disk internal or external in the computer. (best to remove any other drives apart from the affected one and your system one just to be safe)

In my example I have USB drive so I know the size is a 30GB drive so its the one in the "Disk 1 - 28GB"

Then type: select disk "number" the number will be the drive that is your external 2TB drive. In this example mine is Disk 1

Now that your external drive is selected type: clean

[/url]

Now go to disk management

You will notice that the drive says its Unallocated.

Right click it and select new simple volume & click Next

Just make sure when you get to the box below the maximum disk space is the same number as the simple volume

Click next leave the drive letter as default and click next (unless you want a specific letter)

Here by default my drive comes up with FAT32 you might get NTFS. (leave it at what ever it selects, I think your drive will be NTFS) then click next & finish

And wala you have a fully useable drive :) You should be able to go to My Computer and see the full space

Let me know if you get stuck in any of the steps.

Isn't the OP's problem a case of deleting a 2nd partition without expanding the 1st partition to fill the available space?

Really? To me on the original post suggests that he is trying to get the 2TB space. Must have understood wrong. Regardless once the steps above is done he could just split the drive in 2 if there is no data that he wants to keep.

Ok well this isnt embarrassing at all

I just went through all you suggested and managed to complete it and at the end it was showing 931gb

So I checked the part number and as far as i can tell its a 1 tb drive !!!!!!!!

I must have been looking at my other 2tb a drive or something else

I sincerely apologize for wasting everyone's time but if its any help i did learn something!!
