JamesL: Failing to understand why everyone else with the same handset on the same carrier are getting updates yet I'm not

That makes two of us....

And another couple of notes for the 920...

Double-check your date/time settings, even if you're sure you applied them correctly during setup. On two 920's I have found that the settings were wrong again afterwards.

This is independent of the switch that is meant to adjust this automatically.

Go into the settings, disable the auto option, then reset the time by hand and re-enable the auto switch.

This fix finally allowed me to use the Wordament and Linked-in apps, that had both refused to sign in.

And the other thing I've noticed is a bug in the auto-brightness. If you're sitting in the dark and the screen seems very bright, go and turn the auto-brightness setting off and then on and it'll start working and dim the screen.

I read a post somewhere this morning detailing the different types of WP8 updates coming out, and from memory there were three levels... things from Microsoft, things from the carrier and things from the manufacturer. The first two required carrier approval and the third did not. (as I recall anyhow)

As far as I'm aware, we're only getting the manufacturer updates from Nokia so far. And even then, there will be some sort of rollout plan that doesn't just fire it out to the whole world at once. I won't be surprised to find anywhere from a few days to month variation in receipt.

But surely if we're all on the same firmware, the rollout just gets pushed out to all of those that are on it? Isn't that how it works?

Interestingly enough, I decided to reflash my phone just for the hell of it.

When I went into Navifirm+ I noticed there was a version of the variant prefixed with Phi_. I didn't think anything of it and downloaded RM-821_TelecomNZ_AU_VAR241121_etc variant

When I went into Nokia Care Suite to flash the phone, it started downloading the Phi_ variant, then flashed RM-821_etc variant instead.

So, I ended up deleting both variants and downloading the Phi_ one and flashed the phone again.

I then browsed to the extras+info link I pasted in the other thread and was able to install it this time.

What all this means I don't quite know as I'm not familiar with how Nokia or Windows phones work in general, but I'm wondering if my phone and others are running a slightly earlier firmware version.

The other theory I have is that after resetting your phone it might take 48+ hours for the update to arrive again, when reading wpcentral.com forums I noted a few users who had received the network+ update didn't receive it again till a few days later after resetting their phone. So there might be a time based counter so that phones don't hammer update services.

Of course this is all theory and no hard evidence, though it may explain why I haven't seen any updates as I've been resetting my phone quite a lot.

*shrug*

As a side note you can see the Yellow variant firmware there now too

I got the extras+info update this afternoon.  Doesn't seem to change anything that I noticed.

Anyway is anyone else using Xbox Music Pass?  Mine is completely poked.  It can stream but whenever I download a track it refuses to play it saying it is unable to confirm the media usage rights.  I had the same problem on my Windows 8 desktop but I uninstalled and reinstalled the Music app and that fixed it.  Unfortunately I don't have the same option on Phone 8 on the Lumia so I guess it is hard reset time (sigh).

Why does the Music industry go to such efforts to "reward" people who want to pay for their music?

Anyone stuck on 2G on their 920? Past few hours my phone won't get 3G, have tried rebooting and changing to airplane mode several times. iPhone 5 and a Galaxy Nexus next to it have no problem with 3G on Vodafone at the moment.

I just ran into the same media usage rights problem on my 920 this afternoon. It was working yesterday and it still works on my wife's 920.

I'm going to get stuck into that issue after having a snack.

Regarding the DRM issue.. looks like this is going to be another teething problem for WP8.

So long as this is fixed before the holidays I'll be ok with it, but it's certainly a bit of a launch drama for the platform.

I fixed my 3g problem by going into field test mode ( in the dialler type ##3282#) then go into settings eg. the 3 dots in the bottom corner and then select 3g only under network
