lueyyou: Yeah it is disappointing, but Windows Phone 8 has a better update delivery system right?

No, the same.

No update (Samsung Omnia W on VF).  Tried the cable trick a few times, but no joy.  Guess I'll try again tomorrow

EDIT - Tried one more time, and it is now updating to 8779
EDIT - One more cable pull, and I'm up to 8783

Interesting, since 8773 I no longer get notifications of texts or emails arriving... Also, still no 7.8 Worst. Christmas. Ever. ...

Well, I tried the disconnect trick a bunch more times and finally got it to update all the way through to 7.8.

Tricks I used:
- put the phone in airplane mode
- click the Update link, open the WiFi network connection, count to SIX then hit disconnect.

It really does seem to come down to the time between clicking update and disconnecting so once you've found he magic number for your setup, it's easy to repeat.

This worked for me on an imported lumia 800.
Thanks Litespeed

Hmm, have tried Lightspeeds suggestion, I am using the windows phone software on my mac and it doesn't seem to be working.

Why is MS doing it this way? They seem to have an efficient delivery mechanism with their patch Tuesdays? And ios 6.1 is over 20% adoption in less than a week...

It's not like the number of Windows Phone handsets would overload the servers - Windows Update does a good job and they know how to scale. It's not like everyone plug their Windows Phone handsets to update at the same time either.

It's just really, really stupid not to deliver the update to everyone.

Although they did get burnt when they did the first update? Maybe this a way to ensure they don't end up bricking lots of phones if the update is bad? To me it says that they don't get enough testing from devs (unlike Apple presumably?) and aren't confident in their release being solid? Maybe its the internal risk team not the product team making the call? Surely having as many people on the latest version is good for MS as it is good for the devs who can leverage new features etc.
