Haha, i had no idea about vat and all. Never imported anything. Cheers for that. Wonder why the dell is cheaper? i must admit its a nice looking phone but im not into sliders of any kind (personal preference) Im keen as on that Omnia.

just so you know that if the item you are importing in NZ is worth over NZD$400, customs in NZ will charge you GST on the total cost of the item providing they intercept the parcel. so it's luck of the draw when importing expensive items into NZ. some have to pay GST to customs, some don't if they get lucky.

Yeah, and that's total cost of the item including shipping. Apparently if you can get the sender to stick a customs declaration saying it's a "trade sample" with a value of "bugger all", you can sometimes get past it. Pretty sure that could get you in trouble if they catch on though.

Here is the correct explanation of import duty charges. Import duty is not based upon the cost of the product, import duty applies to everything except gifts and samples (to encourage R&D or business), but Customs will not invoice you if the duty is less than $50, not worth it. On most items import duty = GST, except things like cigarettes and alcohol and to protect manufacturers (e.g. Holden in AU). Until last month the GST on $400 was $50. Now the GST on $333 is $50, so now if you import goods value is over $333 you are supposed to get charged GST. It depends a lot on the packaging, if it looks like a gift then they will probably ignore it. If it has a packing slip stuck to the outside they will probably flag it.

Deliberately avoiding import duty is a bad thing. Money has to come from somewhere and I believe in user pays, not increase income tax or regional fuel tax (I live 3km from work, will never have road congestion, why should I pay for roads I'll never use).

I import almost all my car parts, because the local market for Volvo is too small and I can import parts for 1/3 the local price.

A bit off topic, but I think it ties in with the discussion. Hope this is okay and does not drag the discussion off track.

You can never have enough Volvos!

Fair enough. That clove site seems to not be loading up anymore? Hasn't for me in the last few days. How do you order through them anyway? Just with a credit card?

On the original topic, i do believe telecom is moreso to blame here rather than microsoft.

Back on the original original topic, has Telecom ever had an exclusive on a genuinely exciting mobile device? Or is Vodafone's global purchasing power just too great to ever allow this to happen?

Does the same thing happen in Oz? Telstra and SingTel are comparative minnows globally

newznz: Who are you to say he's overeating? If he's annoyed he can't get it on his network on launch day then that's his right. The snobbery and 'I'm always right and you're wrong' on this forum is unbelievable.

He can.

But a phone from Vodafone.
Stick Telecom sim card in.

This advice is incorrect. Except for very few handsets (iPhone 4 and one or two others) you should not get a phone from Vodafone to use on Telecom - most will not work because of difference in bands.
