networkn: What's frustrating is I know someone who didn't buy their copy and can play offline just fine.

I cannot see how that is even possible.  Diablo III runs the entire game world on the server, so the only way to "play offline" as it were would be to run a server emulator, and to do that you'd need to write your own event scripts, AI, etc.  Can you actually substantiate that claim?

actually its mostly client based, with server connection for auction house, saves, and checkpoints etc etc... most else is local pc. It was done during the beta test easily... would just mean you'd not be able to multiplay, and connect to battlenet and all associated "perks" - like - the 3007 errors, lagging, server down, time outs..., all the good things that ppl who bought a copy have inherited.

Probably talking about an early-days emulated server. I know there was one during the Diablo III beta that let you spawn monsters and cast your skills.

Bet there will be full-fledged emulated retail servers popping up in a few months. I know some exist for vanilla World of Warcraft...

Im not having any issues with lag.
Other then the server downtime which I think is to be expected with a new game that needs to supprt so many people, I have had no issues whatsoever. Already have a level 60 wizard.

Maby its your internet connection, i also dont experience lag dependant on the time of day...

I'm looking at buying Diablo III but was wondering if anyone here had a spare guest pass that I could try it out with first.

Cheers

200 ping on counter strike and you won't be able to play. On diablo, at 500 ping it's still playable, but sometimes you will notice your health disappears before you can potion, or hits don't register properly. On 200 ping you can play it fine, otherwise someone else in the house must be making you lag. Personally i get 120-150 ping and no issues at all. However I have experienced higher ping levels due to others in the flat downloading, and server issues.

so out of curiosity are you lagging right now?  atm i'm sitting on 350 msec ping.. it's been a bit better than that some of the time though.

no-one else using the dsl connection.  usually around this tiem it's not too bad.. but it'll be saturday night in the US.. and people playing later at night.

Well it would seem that I have something going on with my PC where if it sleeps (Only happens very occasionally it seems to cause D3 to lag. I haven't had an issue since rebooting, but then my PC only slept for the first time in a month 3 days ago, so earlier lag was likely at Blizzards end.

4 parts, 4 difficulty levels. the first couple of playthrough / difficulty levels are pretty easy.
