Be gentle, I know absolutely nothing about PC gaming...

11 year old son has finally nagged me to breaking point, and I have got him Minecraft.  I have loaded it onto our old 32 bit XP lappy for him to bash about on.  He has played it for ages on his iPad but apparently the PC version is soooo much better?

Now he wants to download and install a program called "Cheat Engine"  he is not permitted to download anything without parents the nagging has begun again.

Apparently it lets him muck around with the game and change some of the programming.  The bit of reading I can understand it appears to be a hack of some sort, so not to keen on downloading it.  It also mentions something about a "64 bit long key"...which I assume to mean it needs a 64 bit operating system? (therefore wont run on the old XP machine?)

Is cheatengine "safe"? (being a relative term on a computer)

Any other core recommendations for him to make the most of Minecraft

Cheat engine can be used on 32bit and 64bit computers.

Lots of kids use it to cheat at computer games. I have never used it but my understanding is this:
Cheat engine lets you edit values stored in RAM, so with a bit of help from online tutorials you can change things like your characters level, money, experience. As far as I know it can't really do any harm to your computer but as I say I have never used it.

He certainly doesn't need it to have lots of fun on MineCraft :)

I've seen it cause an issue on one computer only, Cheat Engine was something that was stopping steam from updating on a Client's machine, why and how I don't know but removed it and was good to go. Most likely just a one time event.

+1.  Though I have not had any experience with Cheat Engine, when you make a new world you can choose to have cheats on anyway.  Then you can do virtually anything you want to anyway.  So unless there is something he wants to cheat that the game can't do then I would say no.

Two more common ones:

/xp 5000
(gives player that amount of XP, 5000 is most you can do in one go but you could do less if wanted)

/give paulthagerous 264 64
(Gives the named player 64 lots of item ID 264, which in this case is Diamond. A full list is here : Note also that only items and blocks can be generated like this. EDIT: can give less than 64 but that is the max.)

There are a few more but these two should be sufficient :)

All opinions are mine and mine alone, and do not represent the opinion of Spark.

Kids these days get so spoilt ;-) When I were a lad I had to cheat at games on my C64 using a paperclip!

Geek points to those here who can answer which pins on which port you'd short ?

Cheers. Yeah not too keen on installing unnecessary stuff. I think he can 'rough it' playing the game for now.
