Be looking to buy a XBox360 or a PS3 soon (haven't settled on which yet) but looking for some guidance please on the hard disk size I'm going to need, there seems to be quite a price premium for ones with bigger disks.

We won't be using it for videos, photos etc; got plenty of other technology around the house to cater for that, so it's sole use will be a games machine.  I also can't see us buying more than half a dozen or so games a year.  I'm guessing the hard disk storage then will be used for game save files, patches and DLC.  Have I missed anything? 

So based on that and the inevitable budget contraints, what size console should I be considering?

On the xbox you can "install to hard drive", meaning that games run from faster media than the optical drive (still need the disk in though). but apart from that, yes, it's mainly just profiles, saved games, DLC, updates, etc. You may find you like to download videos relating to games though.

I'm not a huge gamer, but enjoy the classics. I have a 120GB drive on my ageing 360, and it's starting to be a bit tight.

If you are going to buy few games a year then go for a bigger HDD model. As @mjb has mentioned, you can save the entire game to the hard disk on the Xbox 360 which averages at about 6GB/game. Game runs much faster when it's running off the hard disk and extends your optical drives life since it' only used to run the disc for mere few seconds to ensure that you actually still own the game when you are trying to play it off the hard disk.

Personally I find the 250GB in my 360S great! Have all my favourite games installed, including quite a few digital downloaded games, which are generally around 6GB a piece. Games like Rage & BF3 easily take up 20GB or so each when installed with patches etc.

You can always delete the installed games that you're not playing anymore anyway. It doesn't delete your save games so if you ever want to pick the game up again it's just a case of installing it again. I have a 500gb PS3 but mainly because I use it to record TV as well as game and this can take up quite a bit of space. If you get a lower capacity PS3 and decide later that it's not enough you can easily swap out the HDD for a bigger one, they just use 2.5" SATA.

I have a 300GB PS3 and use it for all my games, with having Playstation Plus I get free games each month so can fill up quite quickly. However I just plug in a 1TB removable HD for any movies, pictures and music (Theres an online guide for setting up the folders so the PS3 detects them. Theres also movies, TV series and music available from the PS3 store so if your going to use it then your space will go a lot quicker.

Can't speak for X-Box haven't had one.
