Well the last chance to get one is gone as they had a public beta weekend where they gave some codes out but it's wasn't public public.

Basically the public beta has finished, the closed beta is still ongoing but you'd have to know someone in the know which I don't to get one. Now it's a waiting game till March 6th.

It was a closed beta - Gameplanet gave away a bunch of codes last week - I managed to get one and had a quick play - was surprised it ran OK on my old hardware :)

Gameplay seems to have gone back a bit to the original style which is good, makes it a lot more playable and friendly to new users to the genre.

Look forward to the full release...

I got mine from Origin, and AFAIK it was a one-hour-only closed beta weekend ended at 8am Monday NZST 28/Jan.

A lot of people are panning the beta saying graphics are fairly average and maps are too small. Anyone who played care to comment?

Anyone know of a modern day equivalent that is available now? City or town builder etc?

We were all given one-hour to play on going through the basic of city building, the map is small but that's because you can many cities to have their specialised purporse. You can control a region or with friends to establish a great region.

On my laptop, upon running it first time, I was told the GFX is below the minimum requirement but the game scales back the GFX and still run great and fluid - on minimal candy-coated-ness but doesn't stop the gameplay.

ANNO 2070 on Steam is close, but I'd wait for SimCity to come out.

Some buildings have upgrades so you don't need to build more powerplants to output more megawatts... It's a whole new reboot of SimCity and it's great - the Glass box is smart and powerful, great to see which buildings consume powers, or produce waste etc.

Thanks for this. I had no idea the game was making a comeback.

I use to play Simcity 2000 on my 486 DX2 66, with 4MB RAM and 120MB Hard Drive. Loved it.

These are probably the people who spend $5000 every 6 months to upgrade their hardware ;)

Graphics looked fine to me, although I had a lot of stuff turned down to let it run well - its designed to be a fun game/simulation, not a photo realistic sim.

I still find Pac Man a great fun game, and my daughter could draw better characters, but I dont care.... its the playability and fun factor I want ;)

I think in a roundabout way, Maxis is pretty much trying to reboot SimCity since EA licensed Tilted Mill Entertainment to create SimCity whilst Maxis was busy with Spore. Now that Maxis is back on board, they're trying to cleanse away the negative taste that Tilted Mill Entertainment has created, I like to think that EA pretty much been served that they're sux at their decision to let Tilted Mill Entertainment touching SimCity name.

I mean look at how EA has marketed The Sims 3 on how EA, since Maxis signed the IP over to them...

I don't mind if the graphics aren't mind blowing, I want decent gameplay too, but a lot of people are giving the same feedback that the maps are stupidly small, gameplay is limited etc. Obviously I am just passing on what's been said.

I managed to get a Public beta key for the weekend access.

Was pretty impressed with it, I have to say.

You only got 1 hour's worth of play time per session, so you would have to start all over again with a new city each time you wanted to play. That was a bit of a pain, but it was kind of fun having to play on the highest speed setting to try and get as much packed into that 1 hour as possible.

Anyone heard issues where apparently origin didn't generate enough keys for the release of Simcity this weekend and some orders are delayed 72 hours?

This is what G2play have told me about my order.

There are issues a-plenty with the full release. I was thinking of purchasing my own copy but I might just wait a bit.

Buy before the 18th and get a free game as compensation from EA for the troubles.

Bit the bullet and bought my own copy today. Toying with whether to try installing on my laptop, or waiting until I get home to my desktop PC to install...hmm...
