Topic # 138526 7-Jan-2014 21:56 Send private message

Hi,

Does anyone else spend an age downloading PS4 game patches?  I'm currently waiting for NBA2k14 to download a 2.5GB patch. It's been downloading for approx 1.5 hours and has has completed 1.6GB.

I'm on Telecom VDSL and have a 40Mb downstream.  Any idea why the PSN downloads are so slow?

Thanks.

Could be a number of things. Most likely that the content has no local cache and so it has to download from an overseas server.

I suspect it is the cache, or rather the lack of it.
For me, playing mostly older games, downloads happen really fast. Downloaded a 500MB patch for borderlands 2 yesterday (which is on psplus this month, so lots of people will have donwloaded it in the last couple of weeks) and it raced down in about 2-3 minutes.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll have to leave the PS4 in standby more often.

Do you not leave it in standby mode all the time?

When I had a PS3, some things were downloading fast as my fibre connection would go, others would take an absolute age to download small files. While my 360 & X1 always max out my line regardless of title...

I found the PS3 had good days and bad days, possibly depended on what content (if any) had a semi-local cache. In the earlier days it was pretty abysmal, my Xbox360 would download as fast as my ~12Mbps connection could cope and the PS3 would download at (if I was _lucky_) around 1/4 of the speed.

So far I've found most of the PS4 stuff to download at a reasonable speed, nowhere near the 3MB/sec my connection can do, but at least 1MB/sec or so. Does suggest they haven't bothered to set up a NZ cache for most things though and it's probably coming from Oz.

Same thing with my PS Vita, some things download quite quickly, others are barely faster than dialup.
