Hi all,

I have seen a few threads on talking about the wonderful things you can do with an Xbox that say: blah blah and I have an Xbox Live US Gold account.

So I did some poking around and there isn't an actual thread addresses this, there are a few that refer to it.

I have read elsewhere that to sign up for a US account you need a phone number, postal code and a US based email account, Hotmail was suggested. Also possibly a street address. These I have read can be gleaned from the US White Pages with no problem and are not verified.

With a US account you can 'see' a lot of the features available to US such as movies and such but you can't actually stream or access them because it tells you are not in the correct region. Unless you have the a VPN set up, but that is covered well in other places another thread.

My question are thus:

  • Is the above correct?
  • Do you need to have a VPN telling MS that you are in the US to sign up for a US account?
  • Do you need a US credit card to sign up a US Gold account?
  • Can you sign up for both an NZ and a US account?
  • What happens to your account if you move house or change ISPs
  • If I sign up for an NZ account will this mean I can't sign up for a US account latter.
Thanks all for the information.

My experiences:

> Is the above correct?
Yes.

> Do you need to have a VPN telling MS that you are in the US to sign up for a US account?
No, not necessarily. But it can make it a little easier.

> Do you need a US credit card to sign up a US Gold account?
No, you can get usually get by without.

> Can you sign up for both an NZ and a US account?
Yes, each will be seperate Live ID. You can use both Live IDs on a single Xbox 360 however.

What happens to your account if you move house or change ISPs
> No problem

If I sign up for an NZ account will this mean I can't sign up for a US account latter.
> No, should be fine - they are quite seperate logins/accounts.

BTW, I written up a short guide that relates to what you are doing. It is here:

Your questions are good though, and might prompt me to add a little additional info to that article.

Thanks I have read your article, several times, and it is great. I'm going to 'do it' in the new year.

This is probably the only aspect I had questions on. A part of me was going: "Why have region specific accounts if there is no verification process or if it is that easy?" but who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I'm also a subscriber to the podcast by the way. Fanboi says Embarassed

It's excellent to hear about all the tech stuff from an NZ point of view. I can read all about great anywhere new tech but knowing what I can actually access here in NZ is a different matter. For that you rock. Looking forward to the end of year wrap-up on Christmas Day when the family gets too much.

Cheers for the feedback! Glad you enjoy what the team put to together each week. In addition to our Christmas episode we have one or two best of shows coming that should be interesting to hear during the break before the special show focussed on the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
