See if you can find a SIM on telecom's old plan. It was 10c/MB up to 300MB then the next 200MB free in each month. If you didn't use data in a particular month, you didn't pay anything. Perfect for occasional use.
I would not recommend the XT network at all it has an issue with SIP via their Data sticks that Vodafone do not, SIP calls that terminate into auto answer endpoints , IVR's etc the call will drop after a few seconds as it appears that due to the speed of the message coming back it does not pass it back through to the gateway,

Yes, I have found that VFX doesn't work too well with exactly the symptoms you describe. The other thread that Fraser referenced explains what is going on.
For me, it's an emergency backup, and the reason I have XT is because of their favourable call plan with the older SIMs. Don't use = don't pay. Works for me :)
