eXDee: I've used VOIP on my android phone over XT and after playing with codecs a bit (and disabling it auto negotiating a high def codec with the SIP server) i found it was quite functional over XT.

Yeah, I think it's more of an issue with VFX than with VoIP in general.  I found that Skype worked fine over XT so maybe some other VoIP service would do the job for the OP?

Or if VFX is the VoIP service of choice (as it is for me), how about forwarding all incoming calls to a Skype number at minimal cost, and then using a Skype phone or Android phone attached to the LAN via WiFi to receive incoming calls?  (thereby unleashing Skype from the usual PC-based requirement).

Yes, Gtalk, which is SIP I believe works fine, it's just VFX that doesn't work over telecom.

Bernie:  I have an inkling that you might be in Canterbury somewhere?

If so, I guess you have looked at other WISP options such as Scorch?

Can't quote on mobile.

But I'm talking about a setting on an android app - eg csipsimple which allows you to choose which codecs you want to use.

I have no idea if vfx or your linksys device supports changing this sort of thing.

Yep, Leeston area .. I can't use Scorch or any of the other providers as they are on the Port Hills and I have
no line-of-site due to a large forest in the way.

I did try Orcon Wireless for awhile, but they have crap service: 512Kb download 128K up and I could not get onto
1/2 the web sites I visit, they were not interested in fixing my issues ..

I am marginal for Telecom 3G, but I get 6Mb down, 2mb up with my current setup, so for internet I am happy.
It's just VFX dial out I want solved.

Hmmm ... interesting.  We have travelled a similar path.  Orcon Wireless continued the product originally known as Xtra Wireless and both used the Kordia Extend network.  Just over a month ago I moved away from that network after being on it for over 8 years.  My speed was 1Mbps down / 340kbps up, which was great in 2004 but not now!  It was extremely reliable, I have to say, and I had no issues with any websites.  VFX also worked very well over it.

Well I put up with them for two years not knowing of any other options. Orcon customer support is the worst I have stuck. They refused to come out to my place and even try another modem as the one I had was very old .... I pestered them on and off for those two years about the web sites I could not get onto ... gave them links to all of the sites, but all they would do is get me to do a speed test ....

As soon as I switched to Telecom 3G I could get onto every web page.

It's a pity you didn't join Geekzone back then.  I could have referred you to NetSpeed who were brilliant to deal with, and their focus is the Canterbury/Otago area.  Stan really looked after me, and I can't speak highly enough of him.  Thanks to Stan, I enjoyed the maximum speed that Kordia's Extend network is capable of, at a reasonable price and with great service.  How many other ISPs do you know where you can call their 0800 number and get straight through to the owner, who has his finger on the pulse?  That's how it always was with Stan.  Pity they don't seem to cover your area.

I think you will find that it's XT in General Grant, nothing different around SIP

If you send me an example (date and time) I will take a look, a little unusual in that its calls out you are having issues with but calls all in are fine, if this was a natting type issue I would expect the inbound calls to be having issues... The reason calls will be dropping is that there is a SIP message that is required by the 2102 to keep the call up after it is connected, most likely this is not happening for outbound calls, but send me the details and I can take a look

Well guys, I have bitten the bullet and ditched VFX (with regret, I like Xnet) and switched to 2Talk.

I now have no issues with calling out over telecom's 3G network .... I will probably still switch networks to Ultimate Mobile though, due to the better network and pricing structure ..

It seems VFX and Telecom 3G just won't play ball together .. maybe 2Talk has more "robust" connection policies ..

Or less robust - what happens when you hang up on a call to a mobile, but the "bye" message doesn't get through. VFX have very robust call auditing, so should there be some missed signalling, it assumes call hang up and drops the call - rather than with some providers the call can be help open for a long time, charging you money. (Not saying this will happen with 2talk, but more pointing out the reason the call drops in not lack of "robustness")

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their ADSL broadband network faster. Why not spend a couple of hundred to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?
Geekzone special price: $150* for master splitter install, normally $200+ through your ISP. Auckland and Waikato areas.
