attewell: fyi all, just upgraded the plan to test the 100 / 50 So my folks live in ChCh, in a new subdivision with fibre.. and been with xnet on fibre for 2 years.. can they upgrade to 100/50? Dean That'll be BOF, not UFB. Eventually all the BOF services will be converted to UFB but I'm not sure of the timeframe.

No , this fibre service does not have this available as they are completely different networks, the only options available to us are 30/10 , UFB will be available in these areas at a later stage Yes I am a employee of WxC (My Profile) ... but I do have my own opinions as well

Question, will enable build a second network over the chorus network, buy the chorus network in christchutch or just leave those chorus areas completely?

The property owners get to decide what happens on the lead up to the house. Other companies can't touch the copper or fibre they don't own in the street or Exchange. But in areas served by Enable, the home owner could, for example, opt to retain copper voice services from Telecom while securing fibre service on another Retail Service Provider (Orcon, Snap, etc). Chorus does not lose any of its infrastructure in the other candidate areas and will continue to sell appropriate services in those markets. I believe Chorus can also choose to build UFB/RBI solutions at its own cost in those areas. But one would have to examine the undertakings and contracts closely to make the legal call on that. So to more accurately answer your question, Enable is building a 2nd network as are all the other Local Fibre Companies funded by Crown Fibre Holdings. Even Chorus is effectively building a new fibre access network over the top of their copper access network. Even Chorus is effectively building a new fibre access network over the top of their copper access network. The Chorus network in question is fibre, no copper. I believe people out in West Melton are still stuck on expensive fibre plans with no (cabled) choice.

If its within UFB zones then enable will be building a network over the top. I'm not sure of Chorus will switch to UFB (if they even can?) or maybe even just close it down.

I couldn't comment for 100% of all cases, but Chorus did have a GPON based fibre product before UFB. The UFB deployment uses slightly different mechanisms, but the fibre / splitter / cabinet topology is the same. So it would make sense for "old" GPON deployments to be moved to UFB standard deployments as business demands. This is not to suggest it will actually occur that way.
