Hi everybody!

I've just been introduced to geekzone, I hear it's the place to be!!

So my little question is, I've been told that steam servers can be directed to download from local servers for free downloading/playing etc.

I was wondering, is there a way to do this for PS3 downloads? Xnet said it could just work for cached content but I downloaded a game and got charged the full 10gig worth. (I'm on a 99c per gig deal)

Any help much appreciated as demos/games aren't small nowadays!

Then that came wasn't in the akamai cache that xnet use..
Probably not a way to do it with the PS3.

What you're describing is zero-rated data, generally where an ISP has a local cache of otherwise overseas-hosted content.  When you download from the local cache it doesn't count towards your download limits.

However:

a) For steam, there's no guarantee that your computer will always download from the local cache (you can force it, but there's still a bit of fiddling involved)

b) I don't believe any ISP in NZ offers zero-rated Playstation Network downloads.

Wow, that's the quickest reply I've ever had from a forum. Thank you so much.

Just a quick last question which I probably already know the answer to... Is there any way to tell what is in the akamai cache?

No sorry there is not, the cache is maintained offnet by the providers of the cache so the ISP's wont actually know what's on it as the cache providers are supplying this type of content

Well there you go, I guess I've never thought too hard about it before but it makes sense that there would be content from abroad cached for ISPs.

I guess I'll just download things I really want to see a little after they've been released in the hope that they've been cached :)

Thanks again for your help, I'll be on here more from now on. Hopefully I can help someone out too!

Phil.

Welcome to Geekzone - yes it really is the place to be.

There is nothing these guys collectively don't know about - or at least are prepared to have a good discussion on!

Cheers
