Hi!

I have an OLD PAP2T (from when VFX was first launched I think - 7 or 8 years ago). It's setup as follows:

SNAP ADSL
Vigor 120 -> Airport Express (bridge mode)
-> Airport Extreme (wifi extended) -> PAP2T via ethernet.

In the past, I've used the pap2t from London, so I suspect SNAP isn't the issue.

The phone works fine, mostly. I can pick up the phone, and make a call. I can then call it, and it rings. No issues there.

However, if I leave it for a while (not sure - we don't get many calls :) next day for sure, may be shorter) and someone calls, the phone doesn't ring. I get the emails saying someone called, and voice mail, but no riningin. Pick the phone up, and it's all good again.

I assume a NAT somewhere is dropping the connection and not telling the PAP2T to reconnect. It could be DHCP, tho it dial immediately, so I doubt thats it.

Any ideas how to fix it? The airport express doesn't have a NAT timeout setting, and the pap2t has a NAT Keepalive, but I can't edit line 1.

saying "call WXC" is a valid response :)

Thanks!

Nic

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router
- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan
- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
- Your general location (or street)
- If you are rural or urban
- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)
- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Yup.... not overly relevant in this case. But a good idea none the less.

You must always take PeterReader's advise, and a master filter will magically fix your VoIP issues for sure :)

Any SIP ALG option in the Apple router? This sounds like firewall issue. Can you plug PAP2T into AirPort Express directly, rather than the Extreme?

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their ADSL broadband network faster. Why not spend a couple of hundred to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?
Geekzone special price: $150* for master splitter install, normally $200+ through your ISP. Auckland and Waikato areas.
*Travel charges may apply. Additional costs may apply for complex installs.
I install - Naked DSL, DSL Master Splitters, VoIP, RBI Rural Broadband. Also a dealer for WorldxChange.

Hi Nic,
PM'd you with what we see on our end, you might need to look for SIP ALG's and disable them, and make sure you got the VFX signalling ports forward to the LAN ip address of your pap2t, speficially UDP port range 5060-5065 (don't worry about TCP as this device does not use TCP signalling).

Hope this works.

Thanks @coffeebaron and @grudge - I'll see if I can port-forward from the Express. Problem is, it takes a while to "timeout", so it's a PITA to test!

But I'll give it a go. From a quick google, the airport doesn't so SIP ALG at all.  Might have to go back to the Fritzbox...

Do you install on Waiheke? If so, I suspect I'll want a master filter once we get VDSL. :) But first we need to go unconditional on the house :)

Pretty sure that Chorus install a master splitter with all VDSL installs (or should do anyway)
