I had in the past been getting est. 8Mbps at my home in Tauranga, WxC fusion plan. Over the last few months, that deteriorated, and when I checked it last weekend, I could rarely get better than 1.4Mbps. So I logged a problem with the HelpDesk. On Monday, a linesman let me know there had been some cross-circuit problems, but that still didn't fix things. Yesterday he came by home - and found that one of the two copper wires just outside my house had pretty much disintegrated. There was a 10mm gap in the copper. My ADSL was coming in on one wire only... New wire to the house, and my speeds are back to 12-14Mbps. Happy with WxC and their HelpDesk's assistance. Amazed at what I had been putting up with while that wire was corroding away to nothingness!

Wow 10mm and still getting 1.4Mb.. thats very interesting Nick, Thanks for the feedback Yes I am a employee of WxC (My Profile) ... but I do have my own opinions as well

One of the downsides of naked connections :) If you had had pots on the line you would have instantly known that the line had gone one legged as you cannot loop the voice line card via earth return. DSL on the other hand will work (albeit badly) with a single wire and earth return. Cyril

In fact, my line still does have the disconnect tone on it - apparently still connected up to a spare port in the exchange, since it isn't crowded. So even without a phone connection, I can get the disconnect beeping if I hook a phone to it... Gives repair guys the chance to do some checking without having to run around putting on jumpers, etc. But this test for me is a blunt instrument - me not hearing the tone might mean the line is discontinuous, or it might just mean they've gotten around to disconnecting it at the exchange!

I'm in mt maunganui - - the speed is great, but inconsistent. e,g for months, my modem syncs at 20,000kbps. Then, a few weeks ago my connection failed completely. The technician came out, found no problems ---the tweaked something in the cabinet, and my sync speed went to 24,000kbps. a few days later, it dropped back to 20,000. Then, yesterday, it jumped up to 26,000. I wonder why the fluctuations? How is the sync speed set? Is it artificially capped (which i suspect), or, should it always just sync at the highest speed then rate is limited by the backhaul? Not that I complain, I never have slowdowns or peak time degradation. Generally, I can always download from the net at 2MB/s. Visitors always remark at the speed of broadband in my place. anyway , just my ramblings :) back to work.

It could be water on your line, could be a bad termination, could be heat changing the impedance of the cable. This is the problem with copper. Hmmmm

Percentage wise 3Mb variation on 23Mb is low: +/- 3M on 23M is about 10%. +/- 3M on say 6M is 50%. I get about 1 or 2 Mb variation on 10Mb. You can never have enough Volvos!
