AllenG:
One cosmetic suggestion. Perhaps change the percentage used to a similar format as the other fields on the Tooltip display ie "Percentage of cap used: 18%"
like the bar graph on the Pop-up.

My grammar may have confused my meaning here.

Should be

"I like the bar graph on the Pop-up"....

Allen.

"Time left" is when the month rolls over to a new billing period, yeah. Couldn't think of better description without being too wordy, lol.

Could add "Percentage used" as a text option as well as the bar, sure.

The bar is just an HTML5 <meter> tag, a quick and dirty implementation for now, haha. Can change colour, though on Windows the only options seemed to be green and yellow (didn't check to see how it looked on Mac OS; wouldn't be surprised if it's blue or something), and I don't think yellow's a very good colour for warning about usage (maybe orange instead?). When I do the history tracking I'll probably work on this some more. I also want to add a notch on the bar, to let you know how far through the month is, so you can see if you're perhaps using too much too fast, or just taking it slow.

In the XML file, there is a <limited /> tag, which I imagine probably changes to give some sort of indication if your speed has been throttled, but I don't know what this is exactly so I've left it alone.

Could add speedtest and pingtest.net as link options; I know those are decent popular tools. Probably won't want too add to much more than that...

I've read that Chrome checks for extension updates every ~6 hours automatically, or sometimes upon launch? But there's no indicator about it. The "update extensions now" button really shouldn't be under Developer mode, heh.

Sorry, I think I confused what I was trying to say about the percentage used. I like the graph the way it is (with changing colours if poss). The suggestion was to change the text on the tooltip displays from "18% of this month's cap has been used"  to  "Percentage of cap used: 18%" to shorten it up and better match the layout of the other items.

Leave the graph as a graph. its good.

I'll lower my cap and send you the xml file when the cap is hit if you like?

Regards Allen.

Ah yep, gotcha re: % text now.

And thanks for finding out the limited info, too!

In my opinion this is more useful than the Xnet usage app now, certainly more configurable. Keep up the good work.

Best Regards Allen.

Xnet Usage Monitor for Google Chrome
Version 1.2.0 (14 September 2011)

New:
  • Added an option to set a custom data cap. (thank you, quiffman)
  • Added display options for daily average usage and monthly estimated usage.
  • Added link options for Xport.co.nz, Speedtest.net and Pingtest.net.
  • Added a date notch () to the percentage bar, so you can visually see how far through the month is.
  • The percentage bar now changes colour based on your usage habits and time left:
    • Green - You probably won't exceed your data cap based on your current usage habits. (bar has not passed the notch)
    • Orange - You'll probably exceed your data cap before the month ends if you don't reduce your usage habits. (bar has passed the notch)
    • Red - You've exceeded your data cap. (bar has passed the notch, and then some)
Fixed:
  • The network status link URL was outdated.
Changed:
  • Automatic updates will no longer be available via Google Code project-hosted CRX files. To receive new updates, please ensure Xnet Usage Monitor is initially installed from the Chrome Web Store.
Available in the Chrome Web Store

Version 1.3.0 (29 September 2011)

Usage is now recorded and can be displayed as a line graph, accessible via the "usage history" link option. Data points for the graph will be recorded when usage info is updated, as long as Chrome and Xnet Usage Monitor are running (eg nothing gets recorded if this extension is disabled).

Usage data prior to the date of when you install this version won't be accessible. History graph won't really be worth looking at until at least 24 hours pass. But certainly after a week or a month, the graph should look nice and be useful.

I think my task list for this extension is now empty. Any bugs or other suggestions, let me know.

Would this be easily ported to other providers? or does it use a xnet unique API?

I really wish providers would add these sorts of tools for their users......

Xnet's API is just a special URL to retrieve an XML file containing data usage. Then it's just a case of interpreting the tags and values within (easily done with jQuery), saving the values, and reading the values and displaying them.

Although my code is structured for Xnet's XML file with its element names and specific error messages, and Xnet's set monthly rollover dates, it would certainly be possible to tailor it to other providers. Just a matter of time and effort to do so.

But I've no interest in doing so at this time, sorry. Source code is available if you'd like to take a shot. There's also Net Usage Item which might suffice?

With Xnet's new plans coming out, it looks like Xnet's "Free data" value is being primarily used for the data included in the plans, and "Standard data" is the overage. It's been like this for a while, but 5 GB free data didn't seem like enough to bother about.

But since the new plans' free data numbers can be pretty large, I'm working on updating my unofficial Xnet Usage Monitor for Chrome extension to combine "free data" and "standard data" together in new ways:

 • New: Data used = Free data used + Standard data used
 • Changing: Data remaining = Data cap - (Free data used + Standard data used)  (used to just be Data cap - Standard data used)
 • Changing: Daily Average, Monthly Estimate and the progress percentage bar will account for both Free data and Standard data, instead of just Standard data

You'll still be able to display Local data, Free data and Standard data separately if you'd like, but I'm making it so that you can get a more condensed version as shown above. In this example, I'm on Fusion 40 which includes 40 GB free data, but have set a soft cap of 50 GB within the extension's options; I've used all 40 GB of free data and have 3.17 GB of standard/overage data used.

Hoping to finish this up today and release the update, but no guarantees - soon though at least :)
