Topic # 91993 25-Oct-2011 16:46 Send private message

I'm having serious problems with calls on VFX.  I figured I'd post it here in case Maverick or someone else can give a simple solution, but if not, I will call the helpline.

The problem occurs whenever we're making or receiving a call, and one of our computers is online and transmitting data (e.g. browsing internet, downloading a file, watching Youtube).  The phone call slows down and keeps dropping out, to the point where conversation is impossible.  All of our computers are connected wirelessly to the Linksys WAG54GP2, including a desktop, a laptop, an iPhone and an iPad.  We also have our TV and Blu Ray connected to the Linksys via ethernet.  To "solve" the problem, we have to stop whatever online activity we are doing, at which point the call goes back to normal.

I suspect it is something to do with QoS settings, but I wouldn't know where to start to try improving things.  Is there a simple fix which I can apply when I get home, or is this something I need to call the helpline for?

it will largely depend on what modem/router/ATA you have, however even the most basic modems have a tickbox to enable some form of auto QoS while more advanced routers will allow you to configure each traffic type manually.

I have installed a custom firmware onto my router which gives me great control over what traffic gets priority so that no matter who's using the internet my voice calls and gaming is unaffected.

Unfortunatly the QOS on the wag54gp2 via wireless is very poor and linksys at the time didn't fix it before stopping support on that model, its probably 6+ years old, does it occur when your onlne with the ethernet connected devices.

Thanks Maverick, I didn't get a chance to check whether the problem happens with the ethernet-connected devices yesterday. I'll try it tonight.

I suspected that it might be a case of old router not performing well. I've been contemplating a router upgrade to take advantage of Wireless N, but I'm holding off until the new Xnet plans are released, and I make a decision whether to stay with Xnet, or shift ISPs and go back to a hardline, in which case the type of router might be different.

I'll test the ethernet-connected device tonight, and post the results here.

Also, post your DSL line stats, and some speedtest results. This can sometimes be congestion / poor DSL issue.

Okay, so I tried a few experiments tonight. I opened a webpage on the laptop (wireless) while on the phone, and the call started stuttering. I opened a webpage on the iPhone (wireless) and the call started stuttering. I opened a youtube video on the TV (ethernet) and the call was fine. So it looks like it's only wireless activity that affects the phone calls.

Turn off wireless
Get a new wireless AP
Plug into LAN port

Okay the issue is as I thought, the lack of wireless QOS, getting a wireless N AP will be a better cheaper option than replacing the whole router if you don't want o the replace the whole thing, basically just as Coffeebaron posted above.

Cool. Thanks Maverick and CoffeeBaron.

Two questions then - does a wireless AP plug into an Ethernet port on the router? And what wireless N AP would you recommend?

The Apple Airport looks interesting. Just out of interest, when you say you use it to reach where the SRP547 doesn't, I'm presuming you've connected it to the SRP547, but the Airport has a stronger signal which allows it to reach to the other end of the house? Or have you connected it to some other device at the other end of the house?

I've heard good things about TP-Link's gear, and this AP had a good ranking on Pricespy. Any thoughts?

Yes correct, I have a cat 5 run down to a switch at the other end of the house and run the airport off that, just gives better coverage.

The TP I use on the road Hotels and such so I can connect that in with the ethernet of a 3g Dongle as use the wireless side for Lappy, Iphone, Ipad etc works well.

Oty really , both will work well the TP has a 3g capability but for your house you may not use it but at the price point if it's good enough they who cares .. :)
