Topic # 92900 8-Nov-2011 22:38 Send private message

Hi all,

Thanks to the awesome support in this forum I have been running a VFX number on an Asterisk server for more than a year now. Now situations have changed and I need to use this number on a Fritz! Box 7140. Unfortunately I haven't had any luck so far and I would like some help please.
I here attach a picture of the account setting page on the Fritz.

Any help greatly appreciated, as usual :)

The one problem with the Fritzbox is that they don't support separate auth and user id's , in this case they have no auth id and this unfortunately we see as a bit of a security hole with just a password, basically what it means that we can't use this box with VFX credentials as we have separate auth and user id as you will have seen and there is no option in the Fritzbox for authid...... sorry I like Fritzbox personally they do some great stuff but without this it's not something we can use as we are pretty serious about our customers protection.

Hmmm... So that means I can not use this for my vfx connection... Bummer...

Plan b then... Because the Asterisk is still working, only at a different location, would it be wise keep the trunk on the asterisk and try to register the Fritz as an extension over the internet?

Thanks again for the help!

That will work but if you are opening your Asterisk box up to remote registrations over the internet you cleraly need to be fully aware of the security implications of doing so. Without an appropiately locked down system I'll just about guarantee you'll be hacked.

Ragnor: Just get a voip ATA and use that off the router?

The point is to not spend more money since I have a device that can do the job, but it is not compatible. Will have to think of it...

Thanks for your replies anyhow!

I see you're point, but given the cost of an ATA, I would have thought your time was more valuable - I know mine would be.

OK... so here is the update.

Following Josh's tip on a PM, I enabled expert settings on the Fritz!Box and I came up with an extra "magic" check box enabling internet number for registration...

So I enabled it as per the image, and used my number without the 0 in the number field, the userauth in the username and the secret in the password... and Voila!!!

Thank you again Josh...

And maverick ... please have this in mind if someone else has a similar problem with the Fritz. Just need to enable expert mode from the system settings...

OK, so here is what I did. Asterisk safety lesson learnt!

All this lead me to try registering my Fritz! over the internet to my Asterisk box... And with the first try... it got registered! So now I was concerned about the box safety, although I have fail2ban and iptables running.
So upon checking my /var/log/asterisk/full logfile I found a 900!Meg long file with attempts from a Hong Kong IP to log on. So apparently my Fail2ban was not doing it's job. It needed a small (but crucial) change in the jail.conf, to point to the actual asterisk log file which is in /var/log/asterisk instead of /var/log/messages. Now I tried logging on my Fritz with the wrong password and ... got locked off!!!

Lesson learn't and now I have a safer box :)
